Friendship centre a key part
of life in this community |

‘THE .KERMODE Friendship Centre: celebrates. its 30th
anniversary this August and its longevity is a tribute to the |

services it provides,
With 38 part time and full-time staff and a client base

. exceeding 2 :000, the centre plays a role i in the lives of many

in the community.
~~ With money from both provincial and federal govern-
ments and a variety of foundations, the centre is able to offer:
a number of ongoing programs for people of all ages.
' However, in late May the centre organized a unique three-
-day conference at Kitsumkallum devoted to elders.

Programs director Marianne Weston says the conference .
se! was a smashing success.
“We had more. than 400 people attend,” said Weston. “lt.

‘more than tripled our expectations.”
Elders from Terrace, Iskut, Haida Gwaii, Kitimaat Vil-

lage, the Nass and Port Alberni attended and the response

was unanimous. ,
“The respondents... 99. 5 per ¢ cent of them said they. were
over the moon,” Weston added:
The goal was to present elders with other elders. who,
through their work, are considered to be distinguished role
models and mentors.

And presenters came from throughout B.C. and one from -

as far away as Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

— “[The presenters] were extremely well feceived,” Weston -
said; adding the theme was embracing the future rather than.
dwelling on the past. The idea, said Weston, was born froma -
strategic planning meeting where Kermode staff came to the
conclusion more could be done for elders in the community,

tion, healthy lifestyles and a move out of poverty for fami- _
lies; a once-a-week soup and breakfast kitchen; a daily drop-

Youth RESPECT, organized activities for youth at risk; and
Family Skills, an intensive parent training and family. reuni-
fication program.
