A6 « The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October 30, 2002 MLA Harris must be tougher on Alcan and its power plan Dear Sir: {In response to the Oct. 16 article “Skeena MLA Roger Harris urges to let Alcan sell power,” | would like to offer these com- ments. . It seems to me that Mr. Harris’ comments may be well intended. However, his comments show his ig- norance on the history of Alcan’s corporate deal- ings, and are indicative of .. his willingness to sell out: his constituency in favour , of supporting his boss Gor- don Campbell’s policy of selling B.C. Hydro to the private sector. First and foremost Mr. Harris should be reminded once again, that the 1950 Water Licence given to Alcan was very restrictive and specific. This in turn gave Alcan’ some limited right to sell surplus power in the vicin- ity of the smelter, provided that priority was given for smelter consumption. Mr. Harris has met with both the union (CAW Local 2301) and District of Kitimat representatives who are most directly im- pacted by Alcan wanting 10 convert their operations into becoming an indepen- dent power provider. It was made abundantly clear to Mr. Harris the ne- gative impacts which would follow if the provin- | cial government allowed Alcan to refocus its busi- hess to that of a power provider. The long-term viability of the smelter would be in serious jeopardy. This would lead to a negative economic impact on Kiti- mat, Terrace and north- west B.C. as a whole. Mr. Harris acknow- ledged at these meetings that he not only fully un- derstood the concerns as expressed but, in fact, agreed. What Mr. Harris now seems te be proposing seems to be a knee jerk teaction aimed to support - Missing Telus Dear Sir: I was in Telus’ phone mart a few days before it closed and the place was ‘ dismal and bare. Those outstanding ladies who work there were sad to see the place close down and so was I. In this age of instant mass communications we have become internet co- lonies of the head office. First they refused to take out bills locally and once we started paying our bills electronically putting a human face on the busi- ness became redundant. The ladies at the phone mart discretely took the bills of seniors and the dis- abled who needed assis- tance and they were al- lowed to pay with cash the old fashioned way. That service is pone. Being on a low income myself, I discavered that their typing-photocopying paper was the cheapest in town. So much for bar- gains. The whole idea of los- ing the phone mart has left a bad taste in my mouth and 1 think VIl sprint somewhere else to do my business, My only reasons for staying with Telus was the local office here and the fine service it provided to Terrace customers, It’s those preat pals who worked there I'll miss. They were like a friend- ship center. Telus can’t tell us anything now. We need to get back to a’ human economy and not. one run by automatons and ATM cashiers. After all, what’s an economy for? Mr. Harris instead should focus his energies on ensuring that Alcan -will move forward to investing significant capital in Kiti- mat-Kemano Works to- ward full expansion in the facility. This in turn would con- tinue. to provide long-term good paying jobs with good benefits which would pravide prosperily for both Kitimat-Terrace and the northwest as a whole. Mr. Harris’ proposition, if enacted, would allow Alcan to prosper as an in- dependent power producer and at best would facili- » Christmas Shopping tate an industrial base in the northwest of smaller industries providing fewer employees with fewer “wages and benefits. Alcan then, would in all likelihood, be in a position to phase out their smelter operation in Kitimat, and Teinvest profits made from power sales either in Que- bec or elsewhere world- wide. | suggest to Mr. Harris ‘to rethink his position on - this issue. Mr. Harris is in fact selling out fo his con- stituency he professes to represent. This is being done in my view merely to support his government's wish to privatize B.C.
