Rain fails to thwart trail builders at Exstew falls CONTRIBUTED ON SATURDAY, Sept. 29, the Coast Mountain Group of the Sierra Club built a irail un the Exstew River. But ao one expected it would. happen that the morning. ‘It was raining,’ raining heavily. It kept raining through breikfast with no break in the clouds. It rained on the way to the library where. we were to meet at 8 a.m, ~*“Bach thought that there would be few, .if any, people there. We were all wrong. By the time all had gathered there were 12 - seven from the club and into the falls. As soon as they disappeared around a corner, another team star- ted to build the first set of steps. (An advance. crew had collected: used railway ties, cut them into thirds, pre-drilled them and-cut rebar to anchor them down.) The others strung out in between, clearing the cut brush, doing the pick and shovel work to level the trail, hauling gravel by the bucket to fill in the low spots and, always, making more steps. Packing the ties up the trail, digging a bed for them, hammering Maybe rain makes British Columbians serious about the work they have to do. five who came out he- cause building a trail seemed like an interesting thing to do, even in the rain. So shovels and brush hooks, matlocks and saws, all the implements of trail building, got: quickly picked into the trucks and off we went. We were full of hope that the sky would lighten as we went down the Skeena Valley. We were WIONg again. - Tt was still taining hea- vily as we turned off the highway onto the Exstew logging road, and the rain stayed with us as we tra- velled the several kilo- meters to where the falls thundered down from the mountain. Maybe that was our sil- ver lining. Maybe rain makes British Columbians serious about the work they have to do. After all, there is litthe comfort to standing around petting wet. So one team formed and began to brush out the trail from the old logging toad down the iron bars to keep them in place, filling in behind. Steps, always more steps. , But by the end of the motning the trail was brushed all the way to the falls. By the end of the day Kathy, Kelly, Rob, Benoit, Dieter, Rhena and Rob, (yes, there were three Robs), all weaving in and out, all focusing on what needed to be done, doing it, moving on. But the cold would probably have crept into our bones and slowed us 16 a standstil! long before we finished if. it had not been for Renee, working under a tarp erected off the back af her truck, heating chili and making coffee. No chuck wagon on the lone prairie ever hada more ‘appreciative - audi- ence than the one that gathered around her tail- gate. The truck is gone now but the trail is there. It isn’t finished but it will take you to the falls in camfort. Drive towards Prince Rupert. Turn right on the logging road just before the Exstew River. After 5 kilometers the road splits.
