People who ate there fram June 1-27 may have been at slight risk of infection. The unit has provided the fol- lowing information on the - MiSCASE so ts What is Hepatitis A? Hepatitis A is an infec- tion of the liver. It is caused by-a virus. What are the symp- ’ toms of Hepatitis A? © After’ the virus enters your body, it can take any- where from 15 to 50 days before you may feel sick. The symploms can be so mild that many people are nol aware that they have the. disease. Other people get sick with some of these symptoms: @ loss of appetite @ fever — W dark urine HB a tired feeling (like you have the flu) ME vomiting (throwing up): @ clay coloured bowel movements M@ a sore feeling in the upper right stomach area @ yellowing of the skin and: eyeballs The symptoms may last from 1 ta 2 weeks to sev- eral months. Most people recover completely and then are immune to rein- fection. Death can occur, but is rare. [lness can be more severe -in people who have hepatitis C. A blood test is neces- sary to diagnose hepatitis How is Hepatitis A spread? Once infected, a person ‘ean pass the virus on to others for two weeks or more before they even know they are sick them- selves. And, they are still infectious for up to one week after they get sick. Hepatitis A can also be caught by driinking conta- minated water, or by eat- ing raw or undercooked shellfish such as crabs, clams, oysters or mussels that have been exposed ta sewage. This disease can alsa be spread by sexual activi- ties where feces may. enter the mouth. Many ‘people who catch this disease may never feel -ill-at all, but they are still able to spread the he- -patitis A virus. This means they can make other per- sons sick even if they feel fine themselves, -.-How can I prevent Hepatitis A? ~~ Protect yourself against Hepatitis A and other gast- rointestinal germs by al- ways washing your hands with soap and water afler using the bathroom, before preparing meals, and be- fore eating. Do not share food, drinks or cigarettes. - Jf you have close con- tact with someone who has Hepatitis A, as shot called immune globulin can pre- vent you from getting sick, This must be given within 14 days of contact with the il] person. Immune globu- lin is provided free in these cases, and can be given by the public health nurse or your family doc- tor. A vaccine is also avail- able to ‘protect people against Hepalitis A. Swim only in chlorina- ted pools. Get directions on trea- ling water to make it safe for drinking. What if 1 am already sick with Hepatitis A? If you already have He- patitis A you will need to get lats of rest. Drinking lots of fluids and ealing goad meals will also help you become healthy again. If you feel sick to your stomach or have a poor appetite, it might help to eat smaller meals and eat more often. , No alcoho! should be taken when you are ill be- cause it may further in- flame your fiver. Avoid any kind of hard work or exercise. If food handling is part of your job, you may be required to take some time off work.
