id le ee) ee Road flooding angers Greenville residents A NASS Valley group says its woried about what harm might come to highways minister Harry Lali should he pay a visit to ’ the area north of Terrace, Matthew Bright of the Gitxal’in Social and Economic Development Association told Lali in a letter last week that flooding of the road into Greenville, caused each spring when runoff swells the Nass River, has angered residents. “Much animosity was expressed about the ongoing shameful condition of local ac- cess roads,” said Bright of a mecting held last week after flooding blocked access to Greenville. “In fact, the people are now downright mad and demand significant action,’ Bright wrote in the May 28 letter to Lali. “While we are apt to invite you 10 take a first hand look at our roads, especially now, we have fears for your safety because of the animosity we speak of,’’ he continued. Bright also wamed that Dan Miller, the North Coast NDP MLA who represents the Nass, should not expect support the next election if more isn’t done to fix roads in the northwestern valicy. “We are certain thal we can influence the voting process at the next provincial elec- tion,” wrote Bright to Lali. “We need simply base our approaches on our MLA’s past and current supportive ac- tions on our behalf, Therefore, we would caution your colleague Dan Miller not to take that slatement too lighily.’’ Marlin said that although the Nass Valley is in the North Coast riding, held by Miller, he’s not been seen since the election, kekkek Regional highways director Dirk Nyland said between 7km and 8km of road was flooded last week. The river can rise for a day or longer, he ~~ said, **We're working on getting more money fo solve the problem,’’ Nyland added. But the solution would cost perhaps $10 million and there’s no temporary fix in the meantime, he said. “We just can’t raise the road (to bring it above flaod levels),”” Nyland continued. **We would have to move it over and that would mean moving the power poles.’’ As well, the road runs along coho habitat, requiring exlra care and expense when doing any kind of road construction. North booster needed A LIBERAL MLA says he likes the idea of having an official whose sole jab is to promote northern develop- ment. But Richard Neufeld isn’t so sure that a separate struc- ture apart from an exisling northern development min- istry is necessary. “We already have an ac- tual ministry and a minister (for northern develop- ment),”’ said Neufeld on a tour through Terrace last week. ‘‘Dan Miller is strong in any event,’’ said Neufeld, “And municipal councils are already sirong in representing themselves. They wouldn’t stop anyway at the northern com- missioner’s office as they would go right to the cabi- net if they felt strongly aboul an issue,’’ he said. What is needed, Neufeld continued, is a united presence throughout the north to take common issues to the south. “They have to know The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, June 3, 1998 - A13 Leona Klein 638-6025 INCORPORATED Telephone/Voice Mail Systems © TC] 638-6090 1-800-893-5033 Official Suppliers of Norstar, Mitel, Lucent Technologies ICI arrry WCONPOARATED Formerly Tolsec Telecommunications Charlie Graydon 638-6024 Phone 250-435-6511 nA sireS. AIDING THE COMMUNITY Alcan Smelters and Chemicals Lid. has once again come through in a big way for Terrace & District Community services Society (a Non-Profit Organization). A presenta- tion of 20 First Aid Kits by Ralph Reschke (right), donat- ed to TOCSS, was made on May 15, at Kitimat Works. Accepting the First Aid Kits on behalf of TDCSS and its newly formed Health & safety Committee are Mike Beausoleit, Executive Director and Marg Simons, Executive Secretary/Health & Safety Committee Chairperson. These kits will be used by Support Workers, in their vehi- cles, as a precautionary measure when transporting the elderly, and mentally and physically challenged individuals. This is the third time that Alcan has generously donated First Aid Kits to TDCSS, and their on-going support of the organization is greatly appreciated, wankers Tiegh apetomes Terrace Home Hardware "Norm's Picks Of The Week _ 5” off Garden hoses, sprinklers, and repair parts Hours Mon - Thurs & - 6 Friday 8-9 ; Saturday 8 - 4 Closed Sundays MGB, ocvucioement corporation LOT SALES & HOME CONSTRUCTION LOT# Lor size, PRICE 41 69,696 $ZB80,000 2 19,160 S$ 145,000 3 16,360 S$ 125,000 A 12,270 S$ +FT1,000 5S 41, 410 $ GG,OCOOO Ss 9,900 $ 53,000 >- 9,042 $ 25.000 s 9,042 S$ 48,500 S 9,150 S$ 45,000 10 41,625 $ G3,000 ie i | 12,700 S$ 63,000 i br 22,8320 s 792,000 13 32,234 $ 897,000 14 39,639 $100,000 15 40,075 S$ 389,000 16 73, 616 S$ 132,000
