Biodiversity poster contest

EARTH DAY is coming up soon, and the Canadian Coalition for
Biodiversity is inviting Canadian children to get involved by joining
their poster contest.

The coalition is looking for posters that show what Canadian
biodiversity means to today’s children and teens. To put that in terms a
child could understand, they’re looking for pictures showlng the varicty
and beauty of anything from a tree toa swampland to a herd of caribou,

. The coalition was formed in 1994 in response to the need to sensitize
and to educate more Canadians about the loss of Canada’s biodiversity,

--and.to encourage conservation activities within Canada. Winners of the
poster contest will experience biodiversity fi rst hand with a trip for
ree,

There are three categories; grades 3-6, 7-9, and 10-12, The size of the
poster should by 38x50 cm.

~ Any materials can be used except photographs and three-dimensional
supplics, Words should not be central to the design. On the back right-
hand comer, print your name, address, age, school grade and home
phone number, Include two or three sentences describing what
biodiversity means to you.

All posters must be postmarked before Earth Day, April 22, 1995.

Best of the north compete

; “THE 30TH ANNUAL Pacific Northwest Music Festival is un-
derway, and will run until April 8, attracting hundreds of performing
~ arts students to Terrace.

The public is invited to watch top northwest students as they perform
“in piano, speech arts, instrumental, band, dance, choral, guitar, vocal
_ and music theatre categories. Programs are available at Sight and
Sound in Terrace, Kitimat and Prince Rupert,

The music festival wraps up with two nights highlighting the best of
the festival. Scholarship night is April 7, at 6:30 p.m. at the R.E.M.
Lee Theatre. The Gala night follows on the 8th at 8 p.m., same venue,
with the adjudicators’ chosen ‘most entertaining”’ performances,

Tickets for both evenings will go quickly and are available at Er-
~ win’s Jewellers.

Foreign students need homes

_. -FAMILES ARE WANTED for overseas secondary students, coming
-to live in Terrace for part or all of the next school year.

“The number of students isn’t known yet, but Laurie Mitchell, the lo-
cal co-ordinator for Cultural Home Stay International, likes to
recruit families as early as possible. The students will come from all
over the world, and are capable of speaking and writing in English.

“The students must adhere to tight behavioral codes,’’ says Mitchell.

_“They’re expected to do chores and to refrain from drinking or doing
drugs.”

Single parent homes are acceptable, as are homes without teenage or
any children. However, parents will be screened and must agree to a
criminal records check.

In addition, a group of students from Japan could be coming to
Terrace this summer for four weeks. Home placements are needed for

_ them as well.

Committee wants access for all
