But it wasn’t un- til the Thornhill Volunteer Fire Department drove up with the ~ latest addition to their fleet that you could see the real value of the fair. Getting people together — business, industry and con- - sumer. This was probably best described by Brian Taylor of RSF Energy from Smithers who said, “Had it not been for us both being at the Trades Fair last year, this thing probably wouldn’t have come about. So I would say it’s a real success” story for the Trades Fair and both of us.’’ What Taylor was referring to, was the opportunity afforded by last year’s fair that brought together the fire department, who had a 1983 five ton flat deck truck, and RSF Energy, who had the expertise to turn it into an emergency vehicle. The two parties discussed the pro- ject, came up with a design and a deal was struck. When the project finally got underway, it took about one month for RSF to build and in- stall a 1,500 gallon water tank and storage cabinets on the back of the truck before it was return- ed to Thornhill, where volunteer firefighters did the wiring and plumbing and attached neces- sary fixtures and painted it. The’ final touch was then added by Rain Coast Signworks who did the lettering. . Assistant Fire Chief Claude Mercereau said the volunteers are proud of their latest addition — they bought and paid for. it themselves with money raised by fighting fires and doing silvi- culture work for the Ministry of Forests. He said they had the truck ready for service on April 14 and it made its maiden run to New ~ Remo on April 21 when it was called out to fight a grass fire.
