14 Terrace Review — Wednesday, April 2, 1986 In the last 100 years Vancouver has grown from a clearing in’ the rain forest to a busy cosmopolitan city, the third largest in Canada, The Westcoasters by David Corcoran (Macmillan of Canada: $24.95) seeks to capture the flavor of the first few years, from 1857 when a Hudson Bay fort and some houses marked the site of Victoria, to the outbreak of the Vancouver fire in 1886. by Andrea Deakin Terrace Book Reviewer Corcoran has the material here for a rich detailed novel, a much longer one than he has written. The result is an episodic narrative, sprinkled with a vari- ety of interesting characters whose full potential is never realized. Fact and fiction are interwoven in an attempt to portray the variety of peoples who lived in and settled the coast of British Columbia, and depict the major events which precipitated the beginning of the col- ony. The pace is lively and direct, the story entertain- ing. The novel will certainly help readers to ap- preciate how colorful a past we have, but, sadly, the potential is here for much more. Vancouver's First Century Douglas and McIntyre have published an updated edition of Vancouver's First Century ($24.95) which was first published in 1977. The first edition covered the years from 1860-1960. This new edition contains 32 more pages of photographs and brings the story of the city up to 1985. I arrived in Vancouver on the verge of the sixties and these are the changes we saw take place. These were the years when developers were rapidly chang- ing the face of the city. These were the years of pro- test against the freeway through Chinatown, of hip- pies and Fourth Avenue, of the influx of new Cana- dians (by 1979, 40 percent of the city’s primary school children spoke English as a second language), of the growth of restaurants, theatres and new shop- ping areas like Gastown and Granville Island, As Ex- po 86 approaches Vancouver, like the rest of the pro- vince badly hit by the recession of the 80’s, the city is putting on its best face. The Vancouver Guide If you are going to Vancouver for Expo, but you are not familiar with the city, Terri Wershler has written an accurate, helpful, well-designed and well-. illustrated guide to the city (The Vancouver Guide: Douglas and McIntyre: 9.95). I know Vancouver well and I would highly recom- mend this guide to anyone. Here is everything you will need to know or to find — hotels, restaurants, shopping, sightseeing, nightlife, parks and beaches, places and things to enjoy with children, and so on. This is by far the best guide yet to the city of Van- couver and worth every cent. dl fe 8 All flyers” don’t come from the Alvina Cutler was last year’s winner of a trip for two to any domestic destination in Canada.
