What a great honour to mect such a remarkable and beau- tiful lady, During the afternoon, as We sat and chatted, she told me stories about her life. She remembered tiames and dates like they hap- peed yesterday, Tf only we could all be blessed with such a Jong, full life and to be sa healthy at the age of 98, And now we will go back a bit and I will tell you a bit about the history of this lovely lady, Mrs. Rosanne Rioux, nee Chamberland, was bom on April 6, 1897 in Drummond, New Brunswick. a, Her parents. were . Elzeard Chamberland and | Emma Santerre. Her mother came from Rimouski, Quebec and her father from St. Modeste, Quebec. Rosanne had four brothers — Joe, Peter, Narcisse and Willie — and three sisters —- Annie, Mary aud Elmire, Each. of her. sisters died at an early age. Rosanne is the only child still living. Rosanne’s - father, — Elzeard Chamberland, worked in ‘a shingle mill and owned a farm at Drummond. The family lived out on the farm until they moved into the Village of Drummond, where her father bought a store. As a young girl Rosanne was very sickly. She never went. to school until she was eight years old, but she léamed a lot from the other children. When she finally went to schaol, she only stayed until she was 11 year old. But by then she was already in grade eight. Rosanne then began working in her father’s store and helped her mother with the housework. And on June 13, 1916, Rosanne married Edmond Lagace. Rosanne and Edmond were married at the St. Michael church in Drummond. The couple met when Edmond used to shop at her HERE ‘N. They had seven daughters — Laura, Simone, Antoinette, Gil- berte, Germaine, Ursula and Anne-Marie, and six boys — Wilfred, Ovide, Edgar, Gerard, Raoul and Guildor. All the children were born at home on the farm with the help of a midwife, Sadly, on November 5, 1938, Edmond passed away of cancer, Rosanne was left a widow with 11. children still at home to raise on her own on the farm. The children all helped. They ‘grew a large garden and kept “some farm animals, Rosanne. used to do lots of sewing; she made all the chil- dren’s clothing from second hand clothes. She also did a lot of sewing for other people, to make extra money for the family. In 1950 Rosanne left the farm and moved to a smaller place. Her sons Ovide and Wilfred took over the farm. Then in 1952 Rosanne went out and got a job in a sanatorium at St. Basils, New Brunswick. In 1960 Rosanne left the east coast and came west to Terrace. Her two sons Ovide and Wilfred had already settled here. er 98 years well MRS. ROSANNE RIOUX was in Terrace recently to visit friends and family, and to celebrate her 98th birthday. But Rosanne missed the cast and in 1973 took a holiday and went back to New Brunswick. While she was there she met an old family friend, Mr. Edmond Rioux. They married on July 10, 1973 and Jater decided to move back to Terrace, In 1976 Edmond and Rosanne moved into the Willows Apart- ments. Then sadly, Edmond passed away on October 30, 1984. Then in 1989 Rosanne decided she wauld like io go live in Quebec. She stayed there for four years, until in 1993 she became lonesome for her family and de- cided to move to Quesnel to live with her son Wilfred and his wife Syd. But for the last month or so, Rosanne has been in Terrace, spending time visiting friends and family, She just recently returned back to Quesnel. But she was here to celebrate her 98th birthday on April 6. What a remarkable lady she is. If only we all could be blessed like her to have lived such a long life, not an easy one, but still at p.m. at McDonalds, 98 years of age, she is enjoying life. She walks well without help or a cane. She eats well and her memory is very bright. She is just a beautiful lady. And we ask for her to be blessed further, so she can celebrate her 100th birthday with her friends and family. Rosanne still has many children living as well as 43 grand- children, 67 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren. Before I go I want to wish Rosanne a belated Happy 98th Birthday from everyone in Ter- race and God bless you. kk kkk Also this week I would like to send out special thanks to Brian Archibald for the lovely Tim Horton Bus.
