The teachers have announced they intend to take the day to visit homes in Powell River and District to explain how the’ province’s financing formula is harming the quality of education. Refreshments Ausp: North Shore Press Club The teachers have invited Education Minister Brothers, Premier W.A.C. Bennett, NDP leader Berger and Liberal leader McGeer to meet with them on, the morning of their strike. Attempting to head off the action of the teachers, Education Minister Brothers called a meeting last Saturday with representatives of the Powell River teachers. However, Tom Young, president of the Powell River and District Teachers Assoc., said the strike is still scheduled. He said the purpose of the withdrawal of services is to acquaint the public with the seriousness of the threat to education, not just to meet with education officials. Young said that defeat of the district’s $475,000 referendum for operating costs will result in drastic staff cuts. Slated to be let ation formula go are a minimum of 27 full time teachers, and several part time teachers ‘might have to go as” well. He said that the staff cuts plus a predicted five percent rise in the number of students will undermine the quality of education in the Powell River’ district. ‘‘We cannot go on like this. It’s an impossible situation,’ Young said. The crisis in Powell River faces many school districts throughout B.C. In many other centres the crisis was narrowly averted by last minute handouts by the provincial government. The action of the Powell River teachers points up the crisis in the B.C. educational system brought about by the present education formula which has’ been widely condemned by labor, teachers, school boards and PTAs.
