an eye to business. The meeting, sponsored by the “Pure Foods Guild,” attracted an odd assortment of diet faddists, nature cure filberts, vegetarians, and aged citizens in a state of advanced dietetic: dupery. Before the program began early-comers swarmed around two tables piled high with give-away literature which attacked vaccina- tion, fluoridation, serums, pasteur- ization, and every advance made by medical science in the past century. : Pamphlets freely promised can- eer cures and abolition of all other human ailments if only the reader would embrace “nature’s ‘way to health.” Naturopathic “doctors” hovered around, greeting members of their flock. In the background a phonograph played a suggestive spiritual . . . “Water, pure water.” ' Chairman E. R. Moxey, president of the “Pure Food Guild” and own- er-of a “health food” store on West Broadway, opened the meet- ing by announcing that the speak- ers would present the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about fluoridation and health. “It is a well known fact among naturopaths all over the world,” he said, “that organic foods are healthful and inorganic foods, that is, like drugs you get from drug stores, will never cure you of anything.” Moxey announced that the “Pure Food Guild” plans to conduct “nu- tritional cooking classes” in Van- couver this year. “We hope the _ idea spreads across all of Canada, for we sorely need a Billy Graham type of nutritional crusade in our country.” Rabidiy anti-Communist Pastor Herbert Robinson of Covenant Tabernacle told his listeners that “df we obeyed the rules of health as laid down by God, we would not need physicians, and — dentists would go back to the trade from whence they sprang —the black- smith shop.” L. C. Lambert, “naturopathic physician,” breathlessly informed his audience that “if a Communist wanted to poison the whole of Vancouver he could kill you all by adding a quantity of fluorine to the water supoly.” It was some- thing to think ebout, he added. A collection “to help defray the heavy expenses of this meeting” was taken during a five minute intermission. . There was plenty of whisper and buzz-buzzing during room sa period. “Did you see the article Built into - EYEGLASSES A modern miracle. The impos- sible becomes a reality. It was obvious that the article exposing the anti-scientific arguments of the anti-fluoridation- ists had been widely read. x * * When Mrs. Lydia Arsens was in- troduced she lost no time attack- ing Maclean’s for calling some anti-fluoridationists “crackpots.” “Tf our domes are cracked, it al- lows a little light and fresh air ‘to come in,” she ca amid applause. Disregarding the fact that Rink dation has been endorsed by the Canadian Medical Association, the Canadian Dental ‘Association, the Canadian Public Health . Associa- tion and the departments of pre- ventive medicine of all our medi- cal schools, Mrs. ‘Arsens . boldly claimed that “only a small hand- ful of medieal and dental societies back fluoridation” and declared that only a “code of ethics” pre- vents “honest and conscientious doctors and dentists from speak- ing up.” The Socred MLA termed fluor- ine “rat poison” ‘and repeated a previous speaker’s comment that Communists “could be be- hind the move.” If a quantity of fluorine was secretly dumped into drinking. water, she said, “you wouldn’t need to worry about national defense or atom bombs—you’d just get a nice little lethal dose.” (Last year suring the Victoria book-burning incident Mrs. Arsens supported the witch-hunters and proposed that all books in the provincial library should be ex- amined for “subversive” content. Her proposal was spurned | by Premier W. A. C. Bennett.) Mrs. Arsens claimed the big aluminum companies are in on the fluoridation conspiracy. “Sodi- um chloride is a byproduct of aluminum,” she said, “and it is an inorganic, deadly poison.” - Let fluorine be added to water supplies, continued the speaker, PATRONIZE ~ CARNEL’S COFFEE SHOP 410 Main St. Now Operated By GEORGE & WINNIFRED GIBBONS Ho Ho Chop Suey UNEXCELLED AUTHENTIC CHINESE CUISINE Reservation for Parties ‘or Banquets PA. 1030 PA, 0713 102 PENDER ST. Don’t be asleep at the switch! Fight for something that your men have died for!” Most of the audience appeared to find this stuff right up their ‘alley. And the “nature cure” adherents applauded loudly when Mrs. Arsens went on to denounce serums and sulfa drugs which are bought “by innocent people who-don’t read the mag- azines we do” and suffer accord- ingly. But wait. There is no such disease on the authori- ty of “Millicent Morden, physician and surgeon,” who has written a leaflet to prove her point. It con- tains evidence like this: “On several occasions I entered the room ‘where the victim was throughout the world after it first , strapped down, and in addition, appeared in the National Guardian , in 1951 and it played a role in in- itiating one of the greatest pro- test movements in history.
