A6 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October 16, 1996 CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag Ex-MP’s tactics divert attention from issues Dear Sir; Having read your news coverage of my debate with Jim Fulton on CBC Newsworld (The Terrace Standard, Oct, 2, 1996), I must respond. 3. ee Your story devoted more than twice as much coverage to Fulton’s comments that they did to mine. Furthermore, while Fulton spent almost all of his energy maligning my name in the most despicable kind. of charac- ter attack I have ever been subjected to, I spent my time attempting to address the is- suc, You did not point this out, The only time I made any reference to Fulton personally was after he accused Reform MPs of being double dippers, This falsehood, coming from a man collecting a multimillion dollar MP pension after only 14 years in office, could not go un- challenged. I will never receive a pension for my years of service as an MP because I and 50 other Reform MPs opted out of this gold plated plan. You did not point this out. I have been very outspoken in the debate over aboriginal: treaty making in British Columbia, and I will continue to be, I certainly do not agree with the direction goverment is taking society in and I have taken great pains to state my reasons why Without allacking anyone on a personal gases. Well let me serve notice that I will not be intimidated by the likes of Jim Fulton. or anyoneelse.. - : What we should all be engaged in is a search for the truth. And to find the truth all sides in this debate have a-right to be heard and a responsibility to be respectful of one another. Mr. Fulton desionstrates no respect for anyone who disagrees with him, and chooses ralher to fling the mud. He and others who engage in his kind of tactics demonstrate litle ‘more than contempt for their fellow citizens and intolerance of the most extreme kind, . Mike Scott, MP for Skeena scott's view called wrong Dear Sir: Reform MP Mike Scott is suggesting that negotiated agreements such as the Nisga'a AIP are indefensible, He’s convinced that by attempting to negotiate settlements in a fair way; settlements that get us beyond this issue, Ottawa and Victoria have created un- certainty and frustration. He’s convinced, among other things, that the Nisga’a AIP lacks respect for equality, freedom and democracy. He’s convinced that it sets up a nation within a nation. [ am convinced that he is wrong and his recent allempt is just electionecring. Democracy is judged by how minorities are treated. A majority may, by sheer weight of numbers, elect to deny a minority redress to past grievances, That doesn’t make the actions fair and just. The tyranny of the majority has been evident throughout history in many countries, So, when Scott talks about government actions regarding negotiations never being agreed to by BC society; when he talks about the need for referenda on issues of fairness and justice, he does not have ans- wers as to how a minority of the population might expect redress for wrongs committed more than 100 years ago. If First Nations cannot expect democratic governments to show leadership on such is- sues, then everyone should pray they never find themselves in a minority. We north- emers should certainly live in great fear of the majority of British Columbians who live in the south, if Scott's version of demo- cracy applies. The Nisga’a AJP conforms to the con- stitution, the Charter of Rights and the Can- ada Criminal Code. Nisga’a land is subject to provincial laws with respect to the en- vironment, forestry, even labour. Access to Nisga’a lands is guaranteed, If this con- stitutes a nation within a nation as Scott suggests, then he might want to check his dictionary. For Scott to suggest that rights are based on race is an interesting observation. Scott should know land claims negotiation is based on who occupied these lands first. They just happened to be of a particular - race. Does that mean we should never seek a setilement because redress of past wrongs is asked for by people of aboriginal race? I firmly believe, and polling shows, that Scott holds the minority view, Helmut Giesbrecht, MLA for Skeena Shroom boom problem Dear Sir: Tam writing about a very aggravating and disturbing situation infiluating Terrace and the surrounding areas, The booming pine mushroom industry seems to be getting out of hand. I have heard of money-hungry groups of mushroom pickers taking rakes to the moss to quickly cultivate these Asian delicacies. Although this disgusts me, I have never noticed how competitive the mushroom season has become until I noticed three mushroom pickers on my property. Once confronted these pickers still did not leave, I find it very ironic that the promise of money has over-stepped all legal boundaries. I believe the pine mushroom industry is a renewable resource which can benefit all concemed, but before one decides to go picking ask the question, ‘‘Is the promise of money so important to me, that I will blatantly over-step all personal and proper- ty to boundaries, to cultivate a few delicacies which once sold I will never see again?” Sarah Glen, Terrace, B,C, Permanent hair removal in a discreet and safe environment using disposable , sterilized, filiments onlpl!
