ON a Ma PR Timbermen tourney a hit | Once again the Terrace Timbermen oldtimers hockey team produced an excellent tour- nament, attracting a dozen teams for the 11th annual event at the Terrace Arena on Feb. 16 weekend. It was a setup of three divi- sions of four teams each. Top teams were declared winners in each division following a com- plete round-robin. ‘A’ side went to Smithers J.T. ‘Drillers on three straight wins. They beat Prince Rupert Wrinkles 10-2, downed Kitimat Merchants 4-3 and blanked Ter- race Convoy 4-0. The Wrinkles were runnersup with a two-and- one mark, Thornhill Northern Motor Inn Okies won ‘B’ side also with an unblemished record. They Terrace has contributed an- other-top class athlete to the world of basketball, but it’s doubtful if we can claim any credit. The name is still familiar around here — Devries. Our athlete is 17-year-old Greg Devries — a six-foot-two start- ing guard for the doubld ‘AA’ L.V. Rogers team of Nelson, His dad — Ed — coached the Caledonia Kermode boys for several years in the early 1970's. Young Greg gained some fame last week when he scored 82 points in Nelson’s 133-72 win THANK YOU!! ~The Host Committee of the Northern B.C. R. people and the many, many volunteers who contributed their time and effort which made the games a success, for without you it could not have happened!! - Thank you from the Host Committee to the Northern B.C. Winter Games ’91 shut out the Timbermen 5-0, blanked Hazelton Skeena 3-0 and whipped Smithers Mutual Group 8-2. The Timbermen place second at two-and-one. It was another Smithers triumph in ‘C’ division. The 3-0 Rubberpuckers started with a 2-1. win over Kitimat Molson Oldies, then followed up 7-4 over Rupert Puckaneers and finished off 8-2 over Stewart Elsworth. The Jake De Jong challenge all-star game went to Wet Coast conference 2-1 over. Dry In- landers conference. Stewart went home with the fair play award. The next tourney is at Kitimat in March. - Allscores can be found in this week’s scoreboard. Terrace-born Devries acourt star in Nelson over Grand Forks. Thirteen of his shots were from the three- point line. _Greg was only two years old when the family left Terrace in 1976, His father told us Greg has a 36-point-per-zame average, and has scored over 50 points on three occasions this season. He’s an A-B student in Grade 12 and is being sought by more than a dozen colleges waving scholar- ships. Although ranked seventh in B.C,, Nelson is expected to challenge for the title with Greg in the lineup. NORTHERN B.C.
