10 Terrace Review — Wednesday, June 22, 1988 - Minor Softball holds two-day tournament _ Five senior divisions of Ter- race Minor Softball, plus a few outside teams, played a two-day weekend series of tournaments ‘at Elks Park and Cassie Hall Grounds on the June 11 weekend. Bantam Boys The bantam boys division had four teams play a round-robin series, with the top two going in- to achampionship game. Skeena * Hotel (3 wins, 1 loss) took on R. King & Sons (3 wins, 1 loss) in the final and won the division by an 8-3 score. Kinsmen and Prince Rupert both finished with one-win, three-loss records. Bantam Girls The bantam girls attracted six teams, including Smithers and Telkwa. Each team played four round-robin contests. Almwood Contracting moved into the final on four straight wins. Doc’s Cartage and Terrace Travel each had three-win, one-loss records, but on a runs-for-and-against ratio, Doc’s got the final berth. Doc’s win this division by beating Almwood 13-10. Records of other teams included West End Chevron (two-and- two), and Smithers and Telkwa both at no wins and four losses. Peewee Boys Prince Rupert boys took the only title out of town for the peewee division. This four-team, round-robin saw Rupert go undefeated. They were four- and-zero in round-robin,. and beat Kitwanga 21-2 in the final. Kitwanga had a three-and-one mark leading up to the final. Northwest Sportsman won one and lost three while Clauce’s Painting was winless in four tries. Peewee Girls It was an all-local final for this division with Terrace Drugs emerging as winners by a 14-3 triumph over Thornhill Huskies. In the round-robin of this six- team division, Terrace Drugs had three wins and ‘a tie, while Thornhill had two wins and two ties. All Seasons had a three- and-one mark, while Cedarland Tire won two, lost one and tied one. Both squirt Stars and Smithers were winless in four at- tempts. Midget Girls The Crest Insulation midgets had one opponent to start. The girls beat Smithers 11-1 and 16-0 on opening day. Then Smithers strengthened up with some Ter- race midget. oldtimers and they placed again. The Crest girls won Once more 7-4, Pumas off to finals Two teams from Prince Rupert and one from Terrace are off to Prince George this weekend for interior ‘B’ class soccer finals. Terrace’s Manuel’s Pumas won the zone under-16 title un- challenged. The other two berths involved teams from all three major Northwest communities. The Prince Rupert Selects won the under-14 section in ‘sudden-death playoffs at Rupert on June 11. Rupert downed Ter- race Philpotts Forestry 4-3. A week previous, Philpotts Forestry had eliminated Kitimat 5-4. - Rupert’s under-12 Selects won another tight game against Kitimat’s Selects by a 2-1 score. Kitimat gained a shot at Rupert by defeating Terrace Cedarland Giants 2-1 on June 4, | Clark one step from Olympics World-class wheelchair athlete Paul Clark of Terrace is only one step away from clin- ching one of eight spots in the planned 1500-meter event at the Summer Olympics in South Korea this September. - A week-long trip to Edmon- ton where he competed in four races and conducted seminars on techniques of wheeling and ‘psyching yourself for racing, resulted in Clark gaining one of four Canadian berths for pre- Olympic finals in Belgium in August. While at Edmonton, he took | part in competitions which made up the other part of his trip. On Thursday the 9th, Clark entered the 5,000-meter open race-and ‘came in first. Then on Friday the 10th, he raced the 1500 event. for his own class during the day. He finished inches out of first place to Doug White of Vancouver, That night was ‘this big event — the 1500 open, In this race the top four would qualify for the Belgium trip. At Belgium he’d be up against the best in the world in 1500 heats and semi-finals. Clark said 40 to 50 wheelers would be seek- ing the eight available berths for the Olympics. Clark held on in the qualifier race at Edmonton to place third and earn his trip to Belgium. He finished up at Edmonton with a 400-meter race on Satur- day the 11th. It was his class and — despite pouring rain the whole route, he placed first. Clark then flew to Winnipeg on the 13th for a week of train- ing leading up to.the marathon.- The Scores are.......
