The project was to a enhance the school's appearance. ‘Winter caution urged TERRACE — Winter is the most. severe season when it comes to fires. Terrace Fire Chief Cliff Best suggests that those residents using their wood stoves or fireplaces should be careful and mind the following tips. by Philip Musselman @ Do not put your ashes from the fireplace in plastic containers when discarding them. Metal containers are far safer to use, in the event that those ashes may start up again. Make sure that the con- tainer has a lid in order to isolate the ashes from the wind, which can cause them to ignite. Also, be careful where you store this waste, keep it out of the wind and away from flammable material; every winter the fire department gets some calls about burning garages. @ Make sure you get your firewood a year ahead so that it is dry and already split for use. @ Keep your chimney clean, at least once a month or more frequently depending on your burn- ing material. @ Find a safe, dry place to store your firewood, in- side and outside. Do not set any wood too close to your heating device. e Be careful with ar- tificial logs, and remember not to use them for anything other than masonry fireplaces. These logs have a content of wax which may cause your wood stove to be plugged up with the emis- sion. @ Don’t dry your clothes close to the stove. A good number of the fire department’s calls oc- cur in the winter, and usually have something to do with heating devices which depend on wood. Last year there were 162 emergency calls and 33 fires to which claims were made. The top four causes were: heating, 38 in- cidents; smoking, 31 in- cidents; incendiary, 17; and cooking fires, 6.
