Air fare reduction asked

OTTAWA (CP) — Tran-
sport Minister Otto Lang
said Tuesday he has asked
the Canadian transport
commission to consider
reducing regulations on
international air charters.

In a press release Lang
said the government has

adopted “a broad new policy
on the economic regulations
of international charters."

“The main objective is to
promote a mix of charter
and scheduled air. services
that best meets the needs of
all segments of the travelling
public."

Vietnamese refugees

SINGAPORE (nKeuver) —
A group of 54 emaciated
Vietnamese refugees
arrived in Singapore today
aboard a ship that plucked
them from their drifting boat

on which 20 others died of .

starvation and disease.

U.S. embassy
spokesman said the United
States would accept all ofthe
refugees on humanitarian
grounds if the United
Nations is unable to resettle
them in other countries
within 90 days.

It was on this condition
that they were being allowed

to come ashore in Singapore -

the Vietnamese boat were in
shocking condition when he
found them drifting in the

“Many of them were
basically just skeletons. It

camps," Captain Leslie
Lawrence said.

He said the refugee boat
left the southern Vietnam
coast on Aug. 4 but
developed engine trouble
after two days. The refugees
ran out of food after five
days.

scheduled services available
to the public and- indeed to
the charter services as
well.”

Within its policy, Lang
said the government wanted
to ensure: |

did not do economic harm to
regular services.

—That a demand for low-
priced leisure air travel is

adquately served.

respected, new ones would
be welcome.

—That Canadian carriers
