from me.

This man asked me if I was an Am-
erican, and I said yes, and he says,
strange as it might sound I’m a native
of Havana and have never been as
much as to Miami, Florida. I’ve never
been to the United States only 90 miles
away. We got to talking and he intro-
duced himself as Carlos Vidias.

I told him its strange that you’re in
television because I’m in recording pro-
motion industry. He says, that’s a co-
incidence because I’m a disc jockey
also. He says, “where are you from?”
and I says, “Atlanta, Georgia.”” He gave
me a look of recognition and says,
“what is your name?” I told him my
name was Don Norton, and he said,
“how long are you going to be in Cu-
ba?” I told him a week, 10 days. I came
down to deliver some recordings to
CMQ to the disc jockeys there. He said
fine we'll probably see you around.

The next morning about six o’clock
this man appeared at the Hotel Na-
tionale. I was asleep when he came up
to my room, and he asked me to undress
immediately. I asked him what this was
all about as I was rather embarassed.
He said just undress. So I did. By that
time I had slipped on my slippers and
had on a pair of socks. I always sleep
with socks on because of an operation

I had on my feet when I was in the

service. The reason he wanted me to
undress was not in fact to see my body,
but he asked me to take off my socks.
He wanted to see. my feet, because I
have no bones in the second toe of
each foot, and this is the way: people
recognize me. I’ll let you see this right
now. I have a silver spring in the same
toe on each foot. There are very few
people who have that and Don Norton
could be recognized by this.

Then as I started to dress he said,
“fine, about noon today I. want you to
bring the sample case over to the stu-
dio and deliver them to me.” So he
left. We didn’t have much of a chit-
chat at that time and a little after
noon I went over to CMQ. I had the re-

your investigation of Ferrie three
years later, did you discover any
“new evidence?
GARRISON: We discovered a
whole mare’s nest of under-
ground activity involving the
CIA, elements of the paramili-
tary right and militant anti-
Castro exile groups. We discov-
ered links between David Ferrie,
Lee Oswald and Jack Ruby. We
discovered, in short, what | had
hoped not to find, despite my
doubts about the Warren Com-

- mission —the existence of a well- _
organized conspiracy to assassi-

nate John Kennedy, a conspi-
racy that came to fruition in Dal-
las on November 22, 1963, and
in which David Ferrie played a
vital role.

PLAYBOY: Accepting for a
moment your contention that
there was a conspiracy to assa-
sinate President Kennedy, have
you been able to discover who
was involved —~in addition to
Ferrie — how it was done and
why?

GARRISON: Yes, | have. Pre-
sident Kennedy was killed for
one reason: because he was
working for a reconciliation with
the U.S.S.R. and Castro’s Cuba.
His assassins were a group of
fanatic anti-Communists with a
fusion of interests in preventing
Kennedy from achieving peace-
ful relations with the Commu-
nist world.

around and he gave them samplé 45’s
singles. Now what he did with. these
albums after I left him that day I do
not know.

After this Cuban episode I went back
into courier activity. All of a sudden I
was called in by my superior. I don’t
think I should give his name, I knew
him as the captain and we all knew

ordings and tape recordings, for the
passing or carrying of information that
would be pertinent to the activity in
which I was to be involved. I did deliv-
er a few messages, on this new. tech-
nique I had come to, using phono-
graphic recordings. I learned to use
cipher in the form of musical manu-
script, also songs being sung over the
radio, or commercial jingles for such as

him as the captain, and he, in fact, was
a captain at Fort Benning, Georgia, but
he travelled constantly. He was affili-
ated with the office of the C.I.D. but in
fact was C.I.A.I was told that my ser-
vices were going to be suspended as
well as my salary. I raised a little bit
of hell there because I wasn’t going to
receive $500 a month.

I was a little. bit hot tempered. I’ve
learned since to control my temper, and
I said, “what if I reveal what I’ve been
doing?” He says, “well, go tell, nobo-
dy’s going to believe you. Who are you
going to talk to?” He said, “I suggest
you keep your ‘mouth shut,” which I
did. So I moved out of Atlanta, Geor-
gia, and went back to my home in Col-
umbus, Georgia. I decided to go into
some professional playing so I moved
to Minneapolis, Minnesota, and played
in and around Minneapolis, taught mu-

sic there over a period of 18 months. I ;

had no'assignments from the Agency
but they’d contact me from time to
time saying, “how are you feeling,
what’s going on?”

I was contacted in the fall of 1959
and told that I would be going back
South. Nothing definite was given. I
continued playing. I went down to New
Orleans for a week-end holiday from
Minneapolis where I met Ferrie again.
We chitchatted, never about business.
At that time I learned that he was a
pilot. It did strike me that the man
was a real odd duck and I want to tell
you a little bit why. He was a definite
homosexual, at least that was what was
announced in the papers, but he never
gave me any reason to believe this,
when I met him from time to time.

I did not return to the South until
November of 1960.

In November 1960, I returned to my
home in Columbus, Georgia, and decid-
ed to take a few days holidays. I went
to New Orleans, and again met Hugh
Ferris, later known as David W. Ferrie.

This particular time I met him in a
big tourist hangout, in New Orleans,
known as the My-O-My Club, which is
one of the world’s renowned female
impersonation clubs. All the employees,
all the entertainers, are in fact female
impersonators. I talked to Ferrie on this
particular night, not on official busi-
ness, but that I was back in the South
and that I was hoping to go to work
shortly, and he said, “Good,” and that
was the end of that.

Now, I establish myself back in Co-
lumbus, Georgia, working in a music

store, in addition to my private teach-,

ings, and a little bit of playing around.
At this time I went in seriously in
cipher, decipher and code and the use

. of mechanical recordings, musical rec-

December of 1960, I went to the Ba-
hamas, from where I was flown into
Havana. I was flown in under my own
name and at this time I met again with

Carlos Vidias. While I was there in
December 1960 there had been an ad-
vertisement for aluminum Xmas trees
throughout the United States and Can-
ada, ‘on radio. “Buy aluminum Xmas
trees” —this was a message. It was used
to tip off all active operatives in the
Central Intelligence Agency and all
anti-Castro forces for the Bay of Pigs
invasion.

At this time I also took more record-
ings back into Cuba for use, playing
over CMQ network. This was of course

. 1960 before the Bay of-Pigs invasion.

I do not know what was exactly con-
tained on the recordings. I do know this
was instruction from the United States
or from the Agency to Carlos or to
men working with him at the time. He
was still in the employ of the CIA, still
working in the same position that I
knew him in 1958. He seemed to be a
different man. He semed to be very
nervous. After the Bay of Pigs in 1961,
Carlos was arrested and thrown in jail,
and the rest of that is history.
