Most of the institute’s course material consists of booklets and other printed material. Hedges said the typesetting and printing equipment which was aquired between May and June of this year consists of five elements: a Wang word processor, a Wang typesetter, a JM camera plate system, a Davidson .702 Perfector printing . machine and a Pitney Bowes collator-stitcher- fotder. “The whole system is capable of producing a 60- page course manual every day,” said Hedges. He said the Wang typesetter-printing system, the first of its kind installed on the West Coast of North America, eliminates the need for skilled typesetters, enables editing and proof reading to take place before the type is set and sets proof-read copy at the touch of a button. “We could have up to 12 typesetters all feeding the storage computer at the same time,’ said Hedges. “And when the disc which stor@s the copy is full we can quickly transfer the in- formation to smaller dises.”” Hedges said the in- stitute selected a 3M camera (model MR 417) to produce plates for the inting press because of its ability to utilize inexpensive, short-run paper plates along with a capacity to produce high- quality half-tones on plastic plates. “But the machine is capable of satisfying all of our varied internal demands including the production of negatives, positives and PMTs (material with a clarity sulfable for creating printing plates), said Hedges. Plates from the 3M camera will be placed in a Davidson 702 Perfector which is capable of producing 32,000 pages, 8% inches by 11 inches every hour. “Tt prints both sides of an eleven by seventeen inch sheet at the same time,’’ said Hedges. The final element in OLI’s high-speed printing system is a Pitney Bowes collator-stitcher-folder, It contains 25 trays each capable of holding a sheet containing four, pages of a booklet,” said Hedges. "It can fold and staple up to 200 booklets in 12 minutes,” Hedges said the whole system cost $150,000 but should completely pay for itself within years. “If we had decided to take our business to a commercial operation we would be out of pocket with three years.” he said.
