Easy Halloween Costumes For Children by Leila Albala Adult non-fiction published by Alpel Every Halloween, parents everywhere are faced with the same problem - what to do about costumes for the kiddies. Either last year’s costume doesn’t fit anymore, or else after a year of storage in - the back of a dusty closet it looks like something the cat might have buried out in the garden. Either way, it usually means a frantic last minute search through the stores. Even if you’re not a whiz with a needle and thread, this book can solve the Halloween costume problem once and for all. If offers 60 costume ideas and patterns (many are no-sew costumes) plus 14 last- _ minute costumes that are all simple and easy to make. Many of the costumes and accessories are also useful for other occasions, includ- ing school plays. Also included are useful tips on making non-toxic makeup and glue "at home, an explanation of where Halloween came from (and how to make it a safe and happy Halloween for everyone), and a list of nonedible treats that will be an interesting and welcome addition to any child’s goodie bag. Produced by Robert K. Weiss. Directed by Dan Aykroyd. Rating: PG-13. Running time: 94 miruttes. Chris (Chase) is a financial pub- licist on Wall STreet. Diane (Moore) is a lawyer. There is definitely some romantic potential here, at least until they go out for a drive one day. Christ acciden- tally takes a wrong turn off the New Jersey Turnpike and they end up in Valkenvania, the town from hell when it comes to speed traps. After a teensy weensy traffic violation they’re hauled off by one of Valkenvania’s finest (Candy) to the booby-trapped funhouse that passes as the town’s courtroom to face 106- year-old Justice of the Peace Alvin Valkenheiser (Aykroyd). It doesn’t take Chris and Diane long to figure out that Valken- heiser has more than a few loose screws rattling around. He’s also got a skeleton or two hidden in his closet, and they’re not the proverbial kind! Even more interesting are his bizarre ideas of meting out punishment to fit the crime. He offers Chris a unique sol- ‘ution - he’ll drop all the charges if Chris agrees to marry his portly granddaughter (Candy). The alternative has something to do with dog meat. This movie is as funny as it is goofy! The Doors ; Starring Val Kilmer, Meg Ryan, Kevin Dillon, Frank Whaley, Kyle MacLachlan, Josh Evans. Pro- duced by Bill Graham; Sasha Harari; A. Kitman Ho. Directed by Oliver Stone. Rating: R. Run- _ ning time: 138 minutes. Jim Morrison (portrayed by Val Kilmer) was considered to be one of the most sensual and exciting figures in the history of rock and roll. From when he first burst onto the music scene in 1965 with his newly formed group, The Doors, until his death in 1971 at the age of 27, his dark lyrics encapsulated the explosive era of the sixties. His music and dynamic style made him into a legendary outlaw almost over- night. The film explores Morrison’s meteoric rise to fame, his unques- tioned loyalty to the other mem- " bers of the group, his obsession with death, and his slow descent into a man-made hell of drugs and alcohol that would eventually destroy both the group and him-. self. Although somewhat confusing at times, this is a very good film in that it manages to Capture exactly the mood of the turbulent sixties, but viewer discretion is advised - nudity and drug related scenes appear throughout the movie. - | Leave your: card with 5,600 readers: The Business Guide. “REM. se7 Theatre ¢Oct.18, 8 p.m. *Oct.17, 8 p.m. — The Alexander Brothers in concert, sponsored by Theatre Alive and "A Touch of White Heather" — "Driving Miss Daisy", by the Arts Club Theatre. il Presented by the Terrace Concert Society *Oct.29, 7 p.m. — Born to Ski, a Warren Miller film, sponsored by Ski Smithers and Shames Mountain The Terrace Inn *Gigi’s — Nasty Toyz Northern Motor Inn, George's Pub Until Oct.19, Ned Rebel with Reg Alexander *Oct.20 to Nov.2 — Dave Johnstone Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 13 *Every Monday and Wednesday — Darts *Oct.19 - 50s Night and Dancel Thornhill Nelghbourhood Pub ¢Until Hallowe’en — Naught 4 Hire Terrace Public Art Gallery ¢Until Oct.25 — Don Weir paintings on exhibit Prince Rupert Performing Arts Centre *Oct.16, 8 p.m. — Elmer lseler Singers, presented by the P.R.
