CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag Terrace’s retail dinosaurs belong in the bone yard Dear Sir: I agree with Diane Pipe’s statement in her Dec 17 letter “of people . spouting off about things _they know little about.” How about people mis- _Tepresenting the facts’? Fact: 192 businesses in favour of slat shopping de- feats hands.down 24 busi- ‘nesses opposed. ’ Fact: 850 signatures still represents 5 per cent of the population — a darn small minority. Having lived, worked and shopped in Terrace for 34 years I believe I know what most shoppers in Ter- race want, Just ask the shoppers filling our shopping centers The beetles are done for now ‘the Star. This should kill Dear Sir: There has been a fan- tastic breakthrough in the fight against the mountain pine beetle. Once again science has triumphed over nalure. Full-page colour ads about the lives, feeding habits and sex lives of - these beetles were placed in The Province with amazing results, As soon as the papers hit the streets the beetles _ went into shock and awe. Ten per cent of them fell out of the trees immedia- tely. Another 10 per cent of the beetles packed up and _ caught a bus to Alberta, The initial results were so good the ads were tele- vised on BCTV and played -during Canucks games. and stores on Sundays and stats, I give credit to the mayor and city council members for not bowing to the pressure of a few, [attended council meetings in the past. con- cerning Sunday shopping and watched September and October council meet- ings on Channel 10 be- cause | was unable to at- tend due to a back injury. . I guess it would be a fair observation to say that businesses that oppose Sunday and stat shopping throughout the year and re- main closed only to open during Christmas season are only greedy for the al- mighty dollar seasonally. This killed 40 per cent more (or maybe it was the game.) After the initial success the decision was made to expand and ads were placed in small rural newspapers, including the Terrace Standard: The kill rate was smaller this time, around eight per cent, pos- sibly because these ads were black and white. It is suspected that an- other 12 per cent of the beetles suffered injuries that will prove fatal, bring- ing the total kill up to 80 per cent, a signficant por- tion of the population. The initial results of this program were s0 suc- cessful it is to be expan- ded to magazines like Ma- cleans, The Economist, Playboy, the Enquirer and Diane if you recall, the old Co-op shopping center . opposed Sunday openings. I, being one of many, took my shopping dollars for gas, food, clothing, hardware, garden supplies etc, etc, elsewhere to the tune of $20,000-plus an- nually, . By the time the Co-op: relented and went for Sun- day shopping their custo- mer base had gone clse-- where and we all know what happened to that -di- nosaur, Diane. So please publish the names of the 24-businesses and I for one will shop elsewhere. Bob Erb Terrace, B.C. off 97 per cent. The ecological group Enviro Earth (no Offence) is reported to be filing a lawsuit under the federal cruelty prevention laws, as they feel death by reading The Province or watching Calgary play hockey is as cruel as il gets. This action will not likely interfere wilh the program. If you think the above is silly, ask yourself what good did these ads do? How many. beetles did they kill? Zero? What good did the money spent on this do? Well, some of the play- ers involved got all of their political contributions back. ; Les Watmough Terrace B.C. Where are our leaders?
