A6 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, July 6, 1994 “TERRACE STANDARD BusINnEss REVIEW Huckleberry mine looks like a winner A MINE PROJECT south-east of Kitimat that’s in the late stages of exploration could mean big bucks for a Vancouver company. Big, big bucks, New Canamin Resources of Vancouver is in the final explora- tion slage at its Huckleberry property near Tahtsa Reach, part of the Kemano reservoir system. . New Canamin president Alan Savage sald the proposed copper mine could earn in excess of $100 million annually for the first five years. Savage said the property is rich In copper, with reserves estimated at 80 miliion tonnes graded al 0.60 per cent copper. The grades continue to, improve with further exploration drilling, he added. In fact, assays from a drill hole in the discovery zone proved ta contain 2.20 per cent copper and 0,014 ounces of gold per tonne across 147 feet, followed by 540. further feet grading 0.615. per cent copper. The findings have Savage ex- cited, even if no else seems to be. “Tf you pulled a hole with these results anywhere in the world you’d be a hero,’’ he said. ‘‘But here at home it’s a non-event.’ The new “East Zone” appears to host a 30 million tonne starter Out & About Gemma grows GEMMA’S IS expanding to Prince“ Rupert, says owner Bruno Belanger. By August hell have the 4,000 square foot former. Shoppers Drug Mart space on Third Ave. in Prince Rupert renovated and in business, It'll contain retail items match- ing the selection now offered by the various Gemma’s outlets in the Skeena Mall. Belanger said he has been thinking aboul opening a Prince Rupert store for the past seven. years, Three Full time and four or five part time employees will be hired, Rafts launched ONE OF THE area’s more prom- inent adventure tourism offerings is back in action. Northcoast Heli-Raft Adven- . tures files people up the Hx- chamsiks River so they can enjoy a rafting trip down its length. The trip down takes about six hours. This is the fourth year for the business, Search is on FOR THE SEVENTH consecu- tive year, the Federal Business Development Bank is looking for candidates for ils annual Young Entrepreneur Awards, There’s one for each province and lerrilory and they key on op- erating success, innovation and community involvement, Consideration will be given to the person’s age at time of busi- ness start up and circumstances faced by company thai were over- come, The pplication deadline is open pit grading close to 0.70 per cent copper. The mine development ap- proval process with the B,C, government is in the works, A full-scale environmental impact report on the project is pari of that. The company says an important factor in the project’s economics is the simple mictallurgy of the Huckleberry ore. It allows high recovery of copper wilhout extra milling. Scheduled to open in 1997, the mine will employ local workers, Another important factor is that the ore is non-acid generating, the company says. Conventional open-pit mining is planned and the ore would be crushed at an on-site mill. Con- centrate would either be hauled out by road to Highway 16 ar to Kemano, 70 kilometes away around Mount Dubois through which Aican draws water for its powerhouse at Kemano. Another plan would see the ore barged down Tatsa Reach and off-loaded for the trip to Kemano. The company is confident it can get the copper out of the ground, mill it on site and market it to smelters in Manitoba and Japan at a substantial profit, It wont be just the company and its stockholders that makes the money. The mine, scheduled [In this week's flyer, the ‘ESPN Baseball’ K CORRECTION Super NES game cartridge featured on page 3 will not be available, We apologize for any inconvenience {his may have caused. Savage said the mine should be lucrative because the world uses more than eight million tonnes of copper a year. Copper is used in pennies, elec- tric ‘motors, wiring, brass and most plumbing fixtures. The company is currently con- ducting a. close space reserve definition drilling program on a © surface core of high grade copper mineralization. “JUST MOVED? hen Man.
