TO HELP YOUR CHILD become a better student, Mead’s Five Star? Plan

offers parents several easy-to-use techniques. For example, help your
child find a quiet, well-lit area where he can study regularly. Once he is
familiar and comfortable with a study site, your child will be ready to

study when he gets there.

The relaxing days of summer have
come toa halt. The school bell has
rang. And your child is finding it diffi-
cult to focus on his studies.

To start the 1994 back-to-school sea-
son off on the right foot, (he Mead
Corporation has developed the Five
Star® Plan to help your child become a
better student. Teach your child the
following easy-to-use techniques and
he should be on the road to belter
grades. :

Be prepared: Make sure: that,
before your child sits down to study, he
has all of the necessary materials —
his textbook, workbook, paper and
pencils. It is also important to have
good reference materials, such as a dié-
tionary, thesaurus, calculator, eraser
und highlighter pens, nearby. By hav-
ing all of the essential study materials,
your child's concentration will not be
broken by getting up and down to look
for basic supplies.

Being prepared also means having a
quiet, well-lit study place, Help your
child select a: comfortable, private
place in the house where he can study
regularly. Once he is familiar and com-
fortable with a study site, your child
will be ready to study when he gets
there. Although it is important that
your child be comfortable, a straight-
back chair at a desk or table is recom-
mended so that he doesn't get toa com-

Be organized: Encourage your child
to study. only one subject at a time,
with a‘break set after every hour of
study, Help your child decide what he
wants to accomplish in-each study ses-
sion and help him to set realistic goals

by breaking down assignments into
manageable pieces.
On a large project, consider working
with your child to develop a stud
plan. Make.a list of all his daily activi-
ties, including special trips such as
going to the library. Consider buying
your child a personal planner to help

Be involved: Encourage your child
to read assignments ahead of time.
This will make the material covered in
class more meaningful. ;

Help your child keep his notes orga-
nized by explaining the importance of
writing the date of each class at the top
of the page, leaving margins for ques-
tions or comments, and leaving space
between ideas. It is also helpful for,

your child to review his notes as soon:

as possible while the subject is. still
fresh in his mind. When your child has
taken good noles and kept up with the
required reading, he shouldn't -have.to.
cram for a test. :

Be thorough: One effective method
of ensuring that your child has. covered
the subject material thoroughly is the
flash-card method. Make a set of study
cards, using 3-by-5-inch index cards,
that includes questions, definitions,
important facts and ideas. On one side
of the cards, write the question. On the
other side, write the answer. Use a sep-
arate set of cards for each subject and
quiz your child on the material.

Be positive: Most importantly, rein-
force your child’s studying habits by
creating a positive attitude. Help your
child relax about studying and don't
push him if he has reached his limit.
