The request was made by the local pro-life group to the Terrace Regional Health. Care Soclety which runs Mills Memorial Hos- pital. Society trustees heard a presentation made by the Terrace - Pro-Life Education Association: - May 27. - = They then decided to pass the request to the hospital’s medical advisory committee which con- sists of the more than 25 physicians in the city, said Mills spokesman Micheel Leisinger. This isn’t the first time the health care society has asked jo- cal doctors to consider the request to give information in wriling on abortion to women considering the procedure. The request stems from a recommendation in the coroner’s report on the death of Myma George..who. had.an. abortion at .. Mills Memorial Hospital in 1991, Complications set.in and she was sent to Vancouver General Hospi- lal where she died. The recommendation was directed. at health minister Elizabeth Cull but also consider- ed by the health care society and three local | doctors, said Leisinger, Sv Those “doctors recommended . then that the subject of whal- is called informed consent remain a. physician-patient matter. - - The ‘health care society ac- cepted the recommendation. _ “Given that it was three doctors __ then, the board decided now to have all the GPs and specialists on the medical advisory com- mitieé take a look at it,’’ said Leisinger. Those at the. June 18 mecting will amalgamate the ideas gathered May 29. The amalgama- tion will then be the subject of another general meeting. “*This won’t be the final docu- ment,’ said Dennis of next week’s session, ‘‘There could very well be other ideas lo go over.”” Work on the community health council by a core group has been underway for some time, This group drew together some of the major health care players in the area and follows the provin- cial government’s plan called New Directions. The plan sets out a gradual move toward local health care de- cision . making. culminating. in 1996 when legislation of official- ly bring them into existence takes hold.
