The job market has af- fected registration in trades programs; people are skeptical of enrolling in a course that can not increase their job op- tions, said Dr. Val George, President of Northwest Community College. George expects 7 the situation to change veo within the next couple of - years, creating a demand for skilled trades people. There has been an overall increase by five percent in total student contact hours, said oy George. TERRACE — Have you: seen strange bicycles with bells ringing in your neighborhood? by Philip Musselman No, this is not an episode of the Twilight Zone — it’s Dickie Dee Ice Cream and its in- troduction to the Ter- race/Kitimat — area.. Dickie Dee Ice Crearn is. a Canadian company operated out of Win- nipeg with franchises all over Canada and in the United States. - In Terrace the Dickie’ Dee franchise is operated by Finn Larsen, who has lived in the Northwest for a long time. Recently he decided that this area needed a business that employed young people who didn’t have jobs or couldn’t get them. About a month ago Larsen began the Dickie Dee franchise under the -company name of F.L. * Distributing. At this point in time Dickie Dee Ice Cream employs eight ‘‘young adults’’,, who range in age from 13 and up. Larsen expects there to be a need for four to six more people during the summer. The company promotes bicycle safety and Larsen hopes to someday hold _ bicycle safety rodeos in parking lots and/or safe park- type areas. Dickie Dee Ice Cream is a Canadian firm based in Winnipeg. It has ex- - | panded from there all over Canada and into the United States, Larsen said. The firm has been in operation for about 27 years and in all that time there hasn’t been one ac- cident involving Dickie Dee bicycles, Larsen noted. This is because each individual rider is trained in bicycle safety to a point where they even suggest to young- sters that they stay on their own side of the street and wait for the bicycle to get to them. The whole idea behind this is to eliminate poten- tial traffic hazards, Larsen explained. Dickie Dee ice cream is being sold at some cor- ner stores and of course, a Dickie Dee bicycle will be in various neighborhoods about the same time each day. Vendors will be selling ice cream bars with trivia questions on the stick. Company represen- tatives will be available at special events and for service club, even to the point where they will supply freezers, Larsen said. As for the ‘‘yourig adults” involved, the job is ‘like self employment but schedules are ex- pected to be followed. According to Larsen work will also help these people build character, business expertise and ~ help them learn to be responsible.
