14 Terrace Review — Wednesday, October 21, 1987 | ne, _ Costume designer enjoys working behind the scenes. *‘As a child I wanted to get in- volved in theater, but I didn’t. | was too shy, but there’s something very exciting about it.”’ Rose-Lynn Fleury is still shy, but as costume designer for the Terrace Little Theatre she's cer- tainly involved up to the hilt in theater these days. She began with the company by doing the design work for last year’s pro- duction of Young Dracula, and she’s now occupied with the TLT’s latest project, ‘‘Heavens to Betsy’’. The play, set to be staged Nov, [3 and 14 at the R.E.M. Lee Theatre, has a cast of 11 main characters and a chorus of 30 — all appearing in custom- cut dress conceived and executed by Fleury. It’s a big project, made larger by a change re- quired of the chorus from their ‘ initial appearance as peasants to a later role as natives of a tropical island. Where do the design ideas come from? In doing ‘‘Heavens to Betsy”, Fleury, along with the rest of the production crew, went back to the master of design himself — Walt Disney. - “This production is almost like a cartoon,’’ Fleury said. ‘‘We looked at Walt Disney’s work and got a feeling for the simplicity of line.”? She added that watching actors in rehearsal often triggers costume ideas. “Pye always had a strong im- agination,”’ she said. The actors’ dress has to match the setting, and Fleury said all the ‘elements: of the production ‘have to be coordinated. ‘Everybody has to work together,”’ she said. “‘I'm in- terested to balancing color and using it effectively.”’ Fleury will be doing the design and pattern cut-out work on “‘Heavens to Betsy”’ herself, but she’ll have some help on the sew- ing. A 17-year resident of Ter- race, she’s been a professional dressmaker for over three years. Her theatrical involvement began when TLT producer Marilyn Kerr asked her to design a costume for daughter. Pam Riverboat Days was the site on Saturday, Aug. 1 of an impressive ceremony when . two totem poles were raised, the first in over 100 years. The pole raising, witnessed by about 2,000 people, was followed by a salmon barbecue and a well- attended feast later that evening. Lee Theatre next month. Kerr. After that she did some work on productions by Ter- race’s Lynn-Leydier Frolick. As. a single mother of six children, five of whom still live at home, Fleury said, ‘‘Sometimes [’m not quite sure how I get the time, I just take one thing at a time.”’ ~. With “Heavens to Betsy” Fleury will be entering a new _phase:in her theatrical activities _ by getting one foot on the stage. She’s going to join the kids in ‘the chorus, and she'll probably | be identifiable as the one trying to hide in back. |.
