_ FOREST INDUSTRY —

Columbia Cellulose, one of Sritish Columbia’s largest
forest products companies, have a multitude of different
operations in the Terrace area. This corporation recently
came under the control of provincial government which will
ensure rapid growth and development.

‘Logs from this large operation come from Colcel's Tree

Farm Licence in the north, near Terrace. Roads are built by .

the company into the areas to be logged ‘costing, up ‘to
$40,000. per mile. Fallers then move in using’ the most
modem methods to harvest the timber; which is sent to the

sawmills at Kitwanga and Pohle Lumber in Terrace and the
Prince Rupert pulp. mill.. Shipment is by truck, rail and
bundles floated down the Nass River to the pulp mill at
Prince Rupert. ‘

Two Chip-N-Saw installations were put in in 1969 at

Pohle and Kitwanga, which provide maxtumum recovery
from each 10g with minimum waste, providing lumber
thickness desired and chips of uniform size from the
remainder of, the -log. One-half of the company's total
northern lumber production comes from the two smallwood
mills, Production in 71969-was brought up to 155 million
FRM. per year.

In 1971 and 1972 facilities were expanded at Pohie Lum-
ber and Kitwanga. Production at Pohle is new over 100
miltion board fect per year. A new planer mill was also ad-
ded to include modern automatic trimming and grading.
Colcel also have their own oursery at Nass Camp, near
Terrace. it produces seedlings which are planted in the

areas logged off to ensure forests for the future.

Thus the circle is completed. The trees are felled, sorted,
sawn, planed and used to manufacture pulp, while at the
other end of the scale, the reforesters make sure that the

“harvest “will continue abundantly welt into the future.

PRICE-SKEENA FOREST PRODUCTS LIMITED — Price-
Skeena Forest Products Limited of Terrace, 8.C. is one of
the Price Group of Companies with its head offices in
Quebec. The sawmill is located within the boundaries of
Terrace. employing approximately 220 workmen, and its
lumber sales office is located in Vanccuver, B.C.

SAWMILL OPERATION — The annual production capacity
of the sawmill is 85 million board feet of lumber. About 50
million feet of the lumber is dry kitlned. The major species is)
western hemlock (80%) with Sitka Spruce (15%) and
western red cedar (5%) as the minor product. .

WOODS OPERATION — In their woods operation, the Com-
-pany hasan annual allowable log cut of 17.5 million cubic
feet. The sawmill uses 14.8 million cubic feet of logs and
the balance of the production is scld as pulp logs. The
woods operation is comprised of 20 company employees
and 6 logging contractors who.emplay in excess of BO men.
