George McKnight’s plan to cut Port Alberni taxes PORT ALBERNI, B.C.—Independent aldermanie can- didate George McKnight: (IWA) has a plan to cut taxes in Pt. Alberni by 50 percent — by making MacMillan-Bloedel pay their fair share of taxes. “Tn 1945 city council agreed to limit the assessment of pro- - perties owned by MacMillan- Bloedel to $800,000. Since then - the. city has. grown tremend- ously,” said McKnight. “M & “B’s plant has. expanded until _ pulp and paper workers and } ‘December .17 municipal elec- it is worth nearly a hundred times what it was when the assessment was fixed at this low level. “Assessment of all other pro- perties (including our homes) amounts to about $15 million; M&B properties should be as- sessed for at least $33 million, which would provide two- thirds of the taxes, Instead they provide less than one- fifteenth. Thus the mill rate on our homes and other bus- inesses is much higher than it should be. “Since the Supreme Court has ruled the ‘Fixed Assess- ment Agreement” is still legal. I am proposing that action be taken by city council and the legislature (the same as that done for M&B) to cut the pro- } portion of assessable values GEORGE McKNIGHT on all properties not covered by the Fixed Assessment agreement to the same ration of assessment as enjoyed by M&B., “Then, by increasing the mill-rate M&B would be com: | December 17 elections. “Now; with disarament a | first and serious question be- || fore heads of government, ‘there is the prospect that this policy can become the reality,” Turner stressed. “But it will come .only. through continued | popular. pressure. The voters can help to determine’ that policies of peace and interna- old discredited policies of cold war, by electing » candidates for peace.” x William Turner, 50, married with two children, is an active | member. of Local 213, IBEW. He is secretary-treasurer of Burnaby Ratepayers Council; ‘| president of Glenwood - South Slope Ratepayers; and a mem- ber of Clinton-Glenwood PTA. Marie. Godfrey, independent candidate for Burnaby school board, also stresses in her pro- gram and election speeches that “through disarmament, by reducing and abolishing waste- ful arms programs, we can have the schools we need.” Full cost of elementary edu- cation should be borne by the federal government through grants to provinces, says Mrs. -Godfrey. “The $1,750 million now being spent annually on arms programs is more than suffici- ent to pay the entire cost of education in the country.” she contends. Mrs. Godfrey is a past pres- tional accord shall-replace the}- who - have ,DIOVER: their, stand ident of the ladies auxiliary, pelled to pay. their. rightful share of city and school costs.” Turner: Divert to people's needs money spent on arms programs’ “ais BURNABY, B.C.—‘“‘To reverse the steady rise in municipal taxes and at the same ms | time to provide needed municipal services, this country must divert to the people’s re (needs a large part of the money it now spends on huge, costly and frequently obsolete arms programs,” said William Turner, independent candidate for Burnaby council in WILLIAM TURN ER Ivan Birchard en ters | N.
