LPP LPP contesting four federal byelections Morris, LPP national organizer, heads a slate of four LPP stand- ard bearers who have been enter- ed in the contests. Others are William Kashtan in Toronto-Trin- ity, Frank Brenton in St. Lawrence- St. George, and Louise Harvey in St. Antoine-Westmount. Voting is to fill vacancies aris- ing since last year’s general elec- tion. The two Montreal contests were caused by retirement of for- mer defense minister Brooke Clax- ton from public life and the ap- pointment of finance minister Douglas Abbott to the Supreme "| Court. The Toronto-Trinity vacancy was created by the death of Liberal member Lionel Conacher, the “Big Train” of hockey fame. The sit- ting member for York West, Rod- ney Adamson of the Progressive Conservatives, was killed in an air disaster involving. a TCA plane and an air force training craft over Moose Jaw. Liberal and Progressive Con- servative parties have candidates in the field for all four ridings: Liberal, Conservative and CCF spokesmen are contesting Selkirk in Manitoba and Liberal and Tory candidates are standing in the On- tario constituency -in Ontario. Among major cities in Can- ada we have the poorest facilities for swimmers. “There is only one public swim- ming pool in the city. ° This pool, situated in the West End, is ob- viously inadequate. “On voting day the people will remember how city council scut-|; tled the pool bylaw, and use their ballots to replace the present NPA council with progressive candidates who will give the citizens of Can- couver a square deal.” When council voted on the by- law issue, two delegations from the National Federation of Labor Youth and local high schools were in the chambers, along with the student council of Kitsilano High School. Earlier, NFLY chairman Archie MeGugan had given Mayor Fred Hume a letter from his organiza- tion demanding that citizens be allowed to vote on the pool. The high school students had previously circulated a petition in the schools demanding that an in- door pool be built at Riley Park. S. H.
