NDP AND SOCIALISM . Ted Bardal, Vancouver, writes: I would like to comment briefly on the ‘“‘Clear the Air’ editorial reprinted in part, from the Western Canadian Lumber Worker. ; The question that first comes 0 mind relates to what the future holds for labor in parti- cular or the ordinary people in Capitalist society. Does it Pecnise security and participa- 1on in the better life which Modern technological progress a Production promises? Does € intensification of monopoly, Control, the threat of war, the Constant battle for a living wage, oa waste in resources and en material; does this type Social order hold any hope for € common man? The answer is of course NO! Then the question arises does Sclal Democracy as pro- Pounded by the NDP hold : peeise of a social order for the ' fe oited and oppressed. Experience, history and realities should have taught labor that to continue pinning their hopes to shams and demagogues only prolongs the misery. In the lands of Socialism, which the S. WORK TOGETHER Mike Freylinger, Mission City, B.C. writes: In the August 29th -issue of the Pacific Tribune the article on Alexander Szakal makes reference to ‘“‘Munkas”’ as a Slavic-language paper. A Hungarian friend advises me that Hungarian is not a Slavic language. He wanted you to know. In reference to the recent election debacle, the the results once again indicate the utter bankruptcy of the “‘go-it-alone”’ policies of the New Democrats. While there are no doubt exceptions, the right wing Social Democrats once again fulfilled their historic role of betraying the working people. It is pure demagogy for anyone to expect workers to vote for a political leadership that has failed to develop consistent and militant action against such anti- labor legislation as Bill 33. Also, it is quite obvious that many of the NDP trade union leaders are no more in the political battle than they have been in the economic struggle ~ for better wages and working conditions. Well the elections are over, and now we need to look to the future. Bennett and company will not solve our problems. The giveaways of our resources and the exploitation of labor will grow apace. The trade union movement under its present leadership will find itself consistently more and more inaffectual in the fight against the monopolies of big business. So who will suffer? The vast majority of workers of course. The ideas projected by the Social Credit party — that the people had to ‘‘choose”’ between free enterprise Social Credit or suffer the consequences of a socialist takeover, was totally false. It is well known that the Social Democrats never have or never will establish Socialism anywhere. So it follows that anti- communism whether practiced in the deceitful way of Social Credit, or the more subtle way of the rightwing Social 21 Days of Sun. SUPPORTS PT Sid Chudleigh, Burnaby, B.C. writes: Progressive - minded people all over the world have devoted many valued and precious hours conceiving methods of eradicating oppressors of people with a common goal, and in many cases they were successful. But, and I underline the word, on so doing we very often effect the bringing forth of other oppressors, that are fully as bad or worse that those we just got rid of. We know the atrocious society we are trying to replace has control of all the media which makes them so powerful, and the key role of this media is of course its ability to “divide and rule.”’ But, and I underline the word again, there is an alternative — “Workers of the World, Unite.” You all know or have heard of that slogan, and what it means. The status quo doesn’t need to detonate nuclear monsters to emphasize its bankruptcy. Any of their ‘‘free enterprise” papers will do that for them. So how’s about it fellowworkers.
