FREE ACROSS CANADA NOVEMBER 1998 fJcTm it m ki IL4 ra|M^^^ fflflM music wasTHii Vancouver, BC Sept 1(Hcr16 By Barbara Doll Alphonse Leong, Denise Sheppara CLOVER H O N E Y Clover Honey are so cute, you don't know if you wanna hug 'em or strangle 'em. Featuring sweet harmonies complemented with occasional synchronised yelps, a drummer with darling pigtails, and a song about finding a dead body I n the Alley Way," the trio were captivating. Singer/guitarist Amy Brannen coolly began many of the songs by herself, sounding a lot like a girl doing Cars covers. -AL JESSE'S GIRL Jesse's Girl certainly knows how to play music, some of it quite catchy, especially the tunes with the trumpet. But the guys seemed bland and somewhat flaccid. The tunes were rather low key and mellow, and even the heavy songs seemed like they'd been soaked in Prozac. The rather interesting assortment of sounds in their songs gives the impression that maybe Jesse's Girl hasn't quite found its niche yet. -BD KICK I N T H E EYE The little girl voice of the co-lead singer gives the feel of a high school dance and the bouncy tunes lend themselves to that overall impression. Kick In The Eye (formerly BMX) brought along their own gong show contestants who danced, laughed and drank while chanting out the band's name. The music was energetic and youthful and the several cover tunes they played were fun. -BD 3«M a a™ across a band playing songs influenced by the Turtles or the Beatles. -BD HISSY FIT A low down deep dirty sound pumped out of the dangerous feminine growling feline in her black leggings with her tomboy torn knees, Hissy Fit's sound conjures up images of a sober Courtney Love. The blonde guitarist babbled to the audience between songs and made his guitar sing while the lioness roared and rocked out hardfortheir toe-tapping head- MOTHERTRUCKER A heavy in-your-face punk band Waring out some ripping music along with the voice of the not-so-dainty lady that is the loud sound of Mother Trucker. Although the lyrics were completely lost in the wash of the gaping sore of the songs, the oozing never stopped and no BandAid would help against the battering abuse of the thrashing beats. -BD SATURNHEAD These five groovy guys have mas- [ tered the Austin Powers flowery Brit pop bounce. It was a sweet pleasure to run Hii bobbing tunes. The short set provided just a tease of the meatier substance that certainly lay beneath the surface. -BD DSK If Hard Core Logo is your idea of a walk in the rock'n'roll park, then put DSK up on a landfill pedestal and worship them forever. This evening's performance was no different from their average, run-of-the-mill thing of beauty. Served up extra chunky thanks to front-tornado Blair Dobson's acerbic ways, the audience ate the Tool-infused testosterone up like candy, through heavy-hitting mulch like "Landmine" and "Shiny" from 1996's Exploder release. If this band — made up of the city's strongest session musicians (Matthew Good, Bif Naked) — were able to fully apply themselves by touring, recording new tracks and not living so damn hard, they'd be huge and loved by groupies everywhere. -DS SATINA SATURNINA Satina Satumina is a visual performance and a musical act. A man in a body suit with a fetish bikini over it, and a baby doll mask covering his face played the mutated guitar sounds. A woman in a similar outfit, with pink fuzz on the armpits, arrives with her beehive hairdo. Meanwhile, during the visual act, the musical trip continued with Satina Satumina poetically speak- ing, twisting words and singing on top of the textured sound. -BD words, and were delivered at top volume with murderous guitar accompaniment. -AL SPACE KID These four guys beat out one fast jump up and down song after another. Overall a bouncy punk sound with very little stage presence. -BD WOW At any music test, at least one band should play disco-ish grooves that last forever. Wow did that and more. Fronted by two women, the group were heavy in the theatrics department. Tubular bells were rung, sparks were set off, and Vishnu goddess poses were struck. The rhythm section was relentless and easily hooked the audience. Like cellular biologists, Wow has taken the virus that is disco and they've come up with a new guitar-oriented strain that engages flesh and mind. -AL DSK SEX IN S W E D E N Considering their name, the group had surprisingly little to do with sex or Abba-like reflections, but Sex In Sweden definitely drew inspiration from someplace. In their case, it was the sweet oi-oi-oi sounds of Buzzcocklovin' 70s punk rock that made this band tick. Democratically dividing up vocals amongst three of the fourpieced outfit, the group knocked out a whack of tight old-school tunes. -DS REVULVA Revulva has as much testosterone as you'll ever find in a girl band (and some guy bands!). Dressed in devilishly red dresses and staring intently into the audience, they dished out a selection of highly charged metal-tinged songs. Most of the lyrics dealt with relationships, included most of the common swear MOTORAMA With more edges than a pentagram, Vancouver's pent-up trio Motorama was certainly not easy music to listen to, but it was great nonetheless. Kicking off the show jamming instrumental^ to the squeak and squawk of radio noise, the group showed their colours early on. Bursting into the first vocal cut, the sound was definitely Pixies-laden and the action onstage was total focus. While the music is likely to evolve further, their live showisdead-on.-DS
