Alderman Ranger then advised that he would be submitting a resolution on this subject at the next Council meeting. From the City Clerk, January 13th, 1977, advising that Mayor Campbell had requested the subject of towing services in the City be discussed with rep- resentatives of the interested towing companies at this time, and Mr. Wayne Ferris, speaking on behalf of Ridge Auto Towing, advised that that firm would like exclusive towing privileges in the City, rather than operating on a month-to-month alternating basis with Coquitlam & Port Coquitlam Towing & Storage Co. Ltd. In response to a query from Alderman Traboulay, Alderman Laking advised that Ridge Auto Towing also operates in the Maple Ridge area for one month a year in addition to towing for the Automobile Association; however, Mr. Ferris stated he did not feel it would be economically feasible for the firm to operate in Port Coquitlam on the present month-to month basis. Alderman Laking stated he felt the issue is whether or not the City wants one local storage yard, properly serviced. Mr. R.E. Sisson, President of Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam Towing & Storage Co. Ltd., stated he felt his Company was providing good service in the City; also, that he was satisfied with the operation being on a month-to-month basis, and Mayor Campbell stated he was in favour of the police using any towing firm they wished when such service is required. Moved by Alderman Ranger: Seconded by Alderman Laking: That the 24-hours a day, 7 days a week service offered to the City by Ridge Auto Towing be accepted 12 months a year. Defeated. Aldermen Laking and Ranger voted in favour of the resolution. Prior to defeat of the foregoing resolution, Mr. Sisson expressed concern that the action proposed would not only prevent him from providing towing service for the Police, but would also cause him to lose some private contracts he has in the City. Alderman Keryluk stated that as he favoured the towing service being operated on an alternating month-to-month basis, he would be voting against the motion and Mayor Campbell made the observation that a monopoly has never been a service to the people. Alderman Thompson stated he felt more than one firm should be allowed to operate in the City in order to provide competition and service, and Alderman Mabbett advised he was totally against the concept of permitting only one firm to operate a towing service in the City.
