In this area, with our abundant supp- ly of creeks, lakes and rivers, it isa serious con- cern. Prepare your child {and yourself} now for any water accident that could occur. At the Terrace Swim- ming Pool we offer three worthwhile programs that not only teach self- help but also teach the skills to help others in various aquatic accidents. Children from eight years of age and older can take the Lifesaving I, II, II classes as long as they meet the minimum swimming requirements. The courses start by introducing the prin- ciples of self-rescue and the basic techinique used in the rescue of others and progress to the stage where the child will receive experience in dealing with the rescue of others. Once a child or adult has reached the white level of swimming and is older than 13 years, he or she can consider taking the Bronze medallion course, Here they will Commerical hockey roundup Commercial hockey’s last game before the New Year, Dec. 30, saw Savalas run up a 5-2 first-period lead and coast for an 11-8 victory over Lakelse. The winners got two- goal efforts from Larry Swanson, Scott Fairless and Darcy Mallett. Singles went to Don LeBlond, Dan Lind- strom, Brian Badge, Randy Merkel and Gord Dempster. Doug Richey had a four-goal night for Lakelse, with the others going to Kevin Goddard, Dan Soucie, Dan Fagan and Jim Rigler. Lakelse held a 40-34 edge in shots on goal, and picked up six of the game’s 10 minor penalties. On Thursday, Jan. 2, a six-goal, second-period outburst enabled Lakelse Hotel to come up with a 7-4 victory over league- leading Skeena Hotel, despite being outshot 30-25 by the losers. Dan Fagan fired a hat trick for Lakelse, while Dan Soucie chipped in with a pair. Jim Rigler and Dave Kawinski also scored for the winners. Emil Gagnon had two to pace Skeena. Louise Gordon és a graduate of Toronto Teachers College, Queens University and the University of Toronto, where she qualified in the three-year course of art as applied to medicine. A member of the | Academy of Medical Tilustrators, she was lecturer and member of staff at the University af Toronto for eight years and worked as a free-lance artist on several medical textbooks. Until recently she taught anatomy and life drawing at the Sir John Cass Col- lege of Art, London, Although it is possible to draw the human figure adequately without a study of anatomy, a knowledge of bone structure and musculature helps the artist produce more satisfying and accurate drawings and anatomical knowledge helps to add subtlety and strength to the finished work. The book consists of a series of brief, clear ex- planations of the skeleton and musculature of various parts of the body accompanied by anatomical drawings and life drawings, showing how anatomical knowledge can enhance the work. In ad- dition to these excellent detailed drawings by the author, there are examples of the work of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Charles Le Brun. The whole provides a sound standard work of reference for the artist. The wealth of information coming to us from the space probes, plus the speed with which we are at- cumulating information, makes it virtually impossi- ble for the layman to comprehend the vastness and sometimes revolutionary import of the knowledge gained. Physicist and author Dr. James Trefil has worked with various specialists in the field to put together a portrait of the universe as it is understood today by the most informed scientists. Space-Time-Infinity — The Smithsonian Views the Universe (Jarnes Trefil — Random House of Canada: $42.75) begins as near as possible to “‘time zero”, a fraction of a millisecond after the moment of creation, and brings us to mantkind’s first glimpses of infinity. The history of the development of astronomy as a science is followed by discussions of the stuff of stars and galaxies, fresh discoveries about our solar system, and the charting of space through time. When we observe quasars we have reached the edge of observability. Looking out into space is looking hack into time, and it is now conjectured that quasars are nothing more than galaxies at birth. Dr. Trefil suggests that they are analogous to dinosaur bones — relics of a more violent past. This is fascinating stuff, lucikly and invitingly written, and with over 300 color illustrations, many commissioned especially for the book. This is indeed a book to appeal to every stargazer, and one which will appeal to young adults as well. It is the kind of book which inspires careers and I highly recommend it to you.
