i | ‘There are many factors to be... considered... when establishing a jlookout™, system oh a Forest Region Scale, according to. the Wincial forest service. A few of those factors are; {ire occurrence, people tse, lightaing occurrence, weather” patterns, access, viblbility and cost. The basic premise is that before.we can fight a forest fire'we must know that there is ‘@ fire and where it is. Forest fires are reported in many ways in the Prince Rupert Forest Region, Fire reports are received from the‘ travelling public, in- dustrial operators, com-.: mercial. - airlines, — homeowners and residents, amateur pilots, CB’ers and many others. Each report is carefully checked but often the forest service finds that the location given is inac- curate, (sometimes by distances measured in hundreds of kilometers) that the smoke reported is ac- tually'dust, pollen or even drifting snow, and that the reported size is wrong. On the other hand many of the fires are found and quickly brought under control. ' The most reliable reporting system available to them is an overlapping system of lookouts, perched high on the ‘mountain sides, covering vast areas of our forests. In the Prince. Rupert Forest Region this year there ‘will, be "23 lockouts operating: from’ Terrace’ ‘through to ‘Burns Lake‘and. Southbank, . and, from. Meziadey Lake through. , to. Dease Lake and‘Atlin in the © North.!
