Al4- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October 17, 2001 Bridge work nearly finished NEW LIGHT standards are being installed and clean- ing up is taking place this week as the redecking of the old Skcena bridge fi- nishes up. Gone are the hardwood African timbers, replaced by a steel grate surface. The work, conducted by Nechako Northcoast Con- struction, was completed well within the contract window, transportation ministry official Geéoff Phillips said last week. The last of the major redecking work was com- pleted late last week. “The project went well despite the weather,” said Phillips of the rain the past months. “And there's outflow winds there and that made it hard to work in.” The steel grates mark- edly change the look and feel of the structure but are considered a cost saver because far Jess mainte- nance is needed. With the thick timber “bumpers” gone on either side of the deck, the driv- ing surface is now wider. At the widest leg, it is now 15 feet compared to 12.5 feet before. Nechako Northcoast of- ficial Peter Landsdowne also said one of the bends has been cut back, making it easier for drivers to ne- gotiate, The sidewalk portion is covered by a fibreglass/concrete compo- site and its texture is rough to provide more secure footing when wet, he said. One advantage of the steel grate driving surface is that snow should fall straight through, as op- posed to building up and becoming a hazard when the deck was made out of wood. Those African hardwood timbers have been sorted. The transportation ministry is getting some of them for community use while Ne- chake Northcoast will sell what's lefi. “There was 1130 odd feet of bridge deck,” said Landsdowne. WELDER GORD Stokkeland applies some finishing touches on the old Skee- na bridge last week. He’s safely secured in his work thanks to a harness. Afri- can hardwood timbers have been replacec by steel grates. The driving surface is wider as well. SARAH A.
