The conference also approv- | ed a motion requesting affi- liates to contribute $2 per * member to the Federation’s « defence fund to assist in fight- . ing legal actions involving _ unions now before the courts and to support Lenkurt strik- ers. ¢ In seeking the increase, « Federation. ley reported the defence fund had dropped to $9,000 in May but had risen to $14,329 in < June. The Federation estimat- + ed it would cost approximate- 7 ly $70,000 to assist the Len- * kurt strikers and finance the * court cases of the unionists ; charged in the Lenkurt dis- pute. Vancouver Labour Council Secretary C. P. Neale stated that the Lenkurt strikers were in desperate straits hav- ing received only $60 during the six weeks they have been out of work. He pointed out that their union (the IBEW) has not contributed a cent from its $35,000 strike fund and its leaders have in fact preferred charges against the Lenkurt leaders and others for having taken part in or supported the strike. Federation Secretary Ray Haynes condemned the action of the IBEW in not helping its own members. The CLC’s Director of Fed- erations and Labour Coun- cils Cliff Scotton charged that the employers were using legal devices to defeat labour settlements. He said: “It is the purpose of management to bleed us to death by involving us in court actions which siphon off our funds. We can only come to one conclusion — that the law is an ass and we must get it changed.” He stated that the solution to labour unrest lies in the eee) PRET — B.C. He warned that the employ- ers will do their utmost to use the laws to destroy the rights of workers to earn a decent living. He called on the labour movement to “de- velop ways and means to get a greater share of the wealth not only for the workers but for those on pensions and other fixed incomes.” He specifically urged great- er unity and a large defence fund in achieving this goal.
