YOU MAY BE ONE OF 10,000 ACT TO STOP THE H-TESTS NOW If the British government proceeds with its H-tests on Christmas Island in the Pacific, you may be one of the 1,000 peo- ple who will die of leukemia as a result. You may already be one of the estimat- ed 10,000 people throughout the world doomed to die of leukemia as a result of H-tesis already carried out. The dire consequences of the Htests are inescapable for some. They may be visited upon your children or your chil- dren’s children in feeble-mindedness or deformities. These grim facts, given by Dr. Linus Pauling, a Nobel prize winner and a chem- ist at the California Institute of Technol- ogy, in his plea for international agree- ment are impelling reasons why you should act — now — to demand that the fed- eral government use its influence to have the tests ended. 702-E1R EU Hers Litiny Vol- 16 No. 18 Se FRIDAY, MAY 3, 1957 VANCOUVER, “10 ¢ Authorised as second class mail by the Post Office Department, Ottawa HeEMIER NABUISI = Ouster was forced ‘ PREMIER HASHEM He succeeded Nabulsi GENERAL HAYARI He lasted a few days harge U.S. attempts to split rah states behind Jordan crisis PEKING Jordan's cabinet crisis was * by U.S. pressure to im- * the Eisenhower Doctrine jnat country, declares the Ng paper Ta Kung Pao. oF Le se i, ting its six months’ of- nthe Nabulsi cabinet had da policy of neutrality ad contributed to the H Of the Arab countries. hi Policy, the paper stated, ® y Was in keeping with n wtonal interests of Jor- 'd not suit the colonial- FEE Sete ae pe ists: The colonialists were alarmed by the victory of the . forces against colonialism in the parliamentary elections.” The paper pointed out that the U.S. was trying to use “economic aid” to force Jor- dan to accept the Eisenhower Doctrine. Before President Eisenhower’s special envoy, James Richards, went to Jor- dan, the paper noted King Huessein had been persuaded to announce a constitutional crisis to oust the Nabulsi administration, which opposed the Eisenhower Doctrine. Take a look at these recent findings: @ The number of Canadian industrial and utility corpora- ding to the Mon tions with assets over the $100 million mark has climbed from 19 in 1949 to 30 in 1955—a short six years, accor tary Times. e ‘: @ While only two are listed with assets Over a bik lion, this group could be enlarged to a dozen if ‘banks, ine surance and trust companies were added. They do not list assets. =e. = @ There are 75 companies in Canada with assets over $100 million including bank, trust, loan, insurance companies and the like. Contrast this item: “Consumer Credit Up $287 Million.’’ At the end of 1956 the Bank of Canada reveals a staggering record consumer credit debt of $2,469 mil- lion. We're clearly in hock to a small group of corpora- tions. One turn of the screw and this powerful group of 75 corporations could wipe out thousands of Cana- dian families. The trend of piling up of profits in fewer hands has continued: in 1956 and 1957. The Bureau of Statis- tics reports: @ Profits after taxes were deducted for 1956 rose a full 15.15 percent or $247 million from a 1955 total figure of $1,596 million. @ And in the first four months of 1957 coupon clippers had taken up a total $25.6 million in dividends, up 19 percent over the same period a year before. . Leading industrial and utility corporations in the over $100 million asset bracket are the CPR, Bell Tele- phone, Aluminum Company of Canada, and Imperial Oil. Aluminum Company assets soared sevenfold. MacMil- lan and Bloedel and General Electric doubled their assets. The CNR with $3 billion in assets is not on the list — it's government-owned. Nor are giants operating out- side Canada like Brazilian Traction (over $830 million); Mexican Light ($192 million) and International Petrol- eum ($285 million). Profit figures like assets show a similar pattern. Inter national Nickel is at the top, Imperial Oil is next. Big U.S. branches like General Motors do not show sales figures because they do not separate their reports from their American branch plants.
