A\2 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, Octaber 10, 2001 wm lear down NEARLY THREE months after a fire ravaged the Terrace Furniture Mart discount furniture store on Lakelse Ave., the burnt-out building was been demolished. The building came down Oct. 1 at the request of its owner Kewal Bal. Bal had until Oct. 4 to tear down the damaged building or else the city would have hired contractors to do it for him. The building was considered too weak to withstand the weight of snow and strong winds come winter. A lengthy investigation into the cause of the fire and the in- tegrity of the building delayed the demolition. SARAH A. ZIMMERMAN PHOTO. In the northwest on a recent tour, Reid said can- celling a union-hire pro- gram for more expensive projects and. one which paid wages just under union scale for less expen- sive work will also ultima- tely save taxpayers’ money. : “Good people will make good wages,” said’ Reid. “There will be good union people still be get-- ting good wages,” But ministry is dedicated to getting the best value for. Reid noted her’. its dallar and that union- . only contract and other fixed wage provisions” worked against that princi- : ple. “This not a social ex- periment,” she said of contract tendering. What"s being cancelled is a company called High- way Constructors Ltd., owned by the provincial government. [t was called in to hire union employees ‘on highways contracts worth more than $30 mil- lion. Also being cancelled is the fair wage program which applied to projects worth more than $250,000. Highway Constructors Ltd. in the northwest is best known for supplying labour to the seven-year, $41 million plan to im- prove the road into the Nass Valley and in the valley itself. ee Smile and Whitening By Dr, Zucchiatti ADENT DENTAL CLINIC Phone: 635-2552 4623 Lakelse Avenue, Terrace Mon-Fri * 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Reid said there was also administration costs and duplication associated with Highways Construc- tors Ltd. She also acknowledged that her ministry is one of those targeted for spending cuts, That's. because the pro- vince has committed itself to safeguarding education and health. care, which consume large amounts of the overall] provincial bud- get. That leaves the other ministries to bear the brunt of spending cuts. But the minister said she'll defend her ministry and its work. “We have a consider- _able investment and we have -to.- mainiain. thai,”. She didn’t discount the idea of toll bridges or toll roads, noting that there has been general acceptance af the toll to use the Co- quihalla Highway. “That highway has becn half paid for by the toll, so there is a benefit to that,” ’ said Reid. She did hold the line at “the idea of selling private companies bridges and ~portians and then leasing them back. : “Nobody has brought “that.kind of thing to my at- ‘tentian,” Reid continued. “Reid is’ the’ MLA for Nanaimo-Parksville and is a shellfish farmer.
