AECL AIME AND MANY MORE.) | | orn and indifference - ‘ Letter To the Editor; . A Merit Award should go to ‘our local TV station, Their con- cern for viewers’ health and. fitness should be recognized. -. How, you ask, does the TV . Station demonstrate their con- ‘cern for my health and fitness? By ‘airing re-runs. Re-runs keep me from becoming a fitless - couch potato. ' Because I have little free time . " for TV, I choose my programs carefully and wait patiently all week for them. Then I often _ tune in to find the station is re-~ running the same episode they aired the previous week. Some’ episodes. I’ve seen so often I know all the dialogue by heart. Well, naturally, this early in. the TV season I turn off the TV and walk the dogs, take a bike - ride, or sort the out-dated newspapers for the. garbage. I tried complaining to the TV station about.the frequency of ‘re-runs, but they were unsym- _pathetic; they blamed re-runs on the . sloppy performance of ‘whoever pulled the tapes to be shown. ‘So I sought the advertisers’ Support, but they were equally unconcerned, at least the na- tional companies. It -seems advertisers buy a ‘‘package”’ of so many TV. programs, therefore “-. re-runs actually give them free _ air time, a bonus for their adver- ’ tation. tising budgets. | Since the TV station —: with ne its CRTC monopoly to serve. the ° _Tegion — isn’t perturbed with my complaints about re-runs, I can only conclude that viewers, . their opinions and. their reac- tions are unimportant to the TV watch the programs they spon- sor, L.can only conclude viewers aren’t important to advertisers, either. Of course, when I was:put off by both the TV station and the national advertisers I spoke to, my ego was battered. Aren’t . viewers the important ingredient in TV? And when they told me I -was the first viewer ever to com- plain to them about too: frequent re-runs, I began to -wonder if I was the only viewer to feel put out by a TV station that. serves me last week’s fare with the okay of a sponsor who ‘doesn't seen to care how his pro- _Spective customers are treated. Clearly [ can’t change the at- titude or performance of-the TV station. Not being a subscriber, I can’t even threaten to cancel cable. But I can push the “Off” switch, and do business only with companies who don’ tspon- sor re-runs, at least this early in the TV season. Mrs. Claudette Sandecki | Terrace RITA MacNI IN CONCERT R.E.M.
