Ken Knull and Chad Ziegler were named the top graduating boys’ volleyball players at the June 28 Thornhill Junior High School awards night. Out-going principal Tom Hamakawa made the presentations. For the first time ever, a team from outside of Vancouver or Victoria won the junior provin- cial swim competition, held on June 25 weekend at the lower . mainland. And that team turned out to be our ‘Points North’ crew of 53 swimmers from Northwest area clubs. Our team of 29 from ‘Kitimat, 21 from Prince Rupert and three from Masset bettered last year’s effort of second place. “Overall, .48 clubs were rep- resented —- 615 swimmers in all. The best competitors in each club were not included on rosters. The meet was a test of depth in talent for the three-day event. a . Three swimmers deserve special mention for their efforts uf in final events that put ‘Points ne North’ into the winners’ seat. a They are Michelle Lafferty and : Lee Encinas of Kitimat, and Ben Bell of Rupert. Tops for us in aggregates were Kim Slater, Ben Bell and Natholie Paolineeli of Rupert; Mikki First of Masset; and Paul Creavey, Michelle Laf- ferty and Lee Encinas of ‘Points North’ team top B.C. swimmers Kitimat. Merit awards went to Jeremy Weir (50 free), Michelle Lafferty (200 fly), Ben Bell (200 fly), Dayna Nelson (400 I.M.), Lee: Encinas (200 fly), Shelly ‘Simp- son. (200 fly), David Anthony (400 I.M.). ° The Terrace Bluebacks’ swim . club entered a solo team of seven competitors. They had two medal winners. Billy Holland. won the 13-and-14 boys’ 100 back and took thirdinthe 2001.M. — Lisa Gardiner won bronze in girls’ 10-and-under. 100 fly. She" was also fifth in the 200 I.M. and seventh in the 50 fly. Garth Coxford had two fourths and a fifth in his nine-and-10. boys’ events, and he’s only eight years old. Clint Sheppard is also eight and swam in the nine-and-10 group. - Sam Mackenzie in l1-and- 12 girls made her first out-of-region appearance atid improved all her times in freestyle events. In 15-and-over boys, Terry Llewelyn bested his~ previous times in two events. Yaz takes another seniors’ golf title Terrace’s John Yasinchuk has almost laid claim to permanent ownership of the Northwest Seniors Golf Championship. He won the prestigious 36-hole event at Prince Rupert for the third straight year on June 25 weekend, Yaz shot a 144 to finish 10 . strokes up on tunnerup John Pylot of the host club. The men’s overall low net went to Rupert’s E.J. Arney. Pylot took low gross fot the championship flight while. net went to Harvey Moore. In the it: i ‘Ral h” Ronnsett took net.. -_ Overgaard and Pop Wright for gross and net honors, respective- ly. Vic Marion won gross honors for the second flight. Net went to Wally Antilla, On the ladies side, Selma Standring-came in to win overall low gross. Lee Scherk won over- all low net.
