me ate tataharteieeeas : ee ees lively controversy among steelhead fishermen whether roe or fish eggs are more effective in catching steelhead than artificial jures. Lhesilate to say how many more steelhead one would catch while using roe Over artificials, although 1 wouldn't be surprised if roe R.D. to borrow $275,000 According to an Order-in- Council signed by the Lieutenant-Governor in Council on September 9, the Kitimal-Stikine Regional District now has the authority to borrow another $275,000 for use in improving the Kitsumkalum Ski Hill facility. This is in addition to the $400,000° already borrowed by the Regional District for the hill. Order-in-Council increases the borrowing power of the board by that amount under sup- 2713 Cul; spp alone or in combination with a spin-n-glo or a lil-corkey would, nine times out of ten, RESIS beat artificials. Water conditions, the competance of the angler and the time of migralion of steelhead are all reasons why this may not always be true. However, I would be willing to bet that over the entire season on a river such as the Copper, financing project by using a loop-hole in the Municipal Act, The Regional District Board asked Terrace District Council to aet on this without going to referendum. Council had the choice to elther approve or refer the matter to the people. They decided to make the decision them- selves. => fishes wit that an angler who normaily lures «such. as spin-n-gloes, would -sub- stantially improve upon his or her success if” they: switched to rae and used it exclusively. The successful , use Of roe as a Jure does not mean that artificials are not effective as fish getters. On the contrary, spin-n-gloes as most steelhead fishermen - know, are deadly if fished with confidence | and knowledge. And there are many other lures equally as effective; for example, latex rubber gooy-bobs, artificial eggs, strawberry spins, Oke drifters, Lo name a few: As well, metal | wobblers and spinners, such as teespoons, krokadiles, weighted spinners, kitimats, devon minnows, all work in given situations. The degree of success one has with artificials depends for skill hill The original funding of the ski complex was approved by the voters in a referen- um. : . In the case of the Thor- nhill area, again no referendum but the decision, was made by the Electoral, area “C” Director at that: ime. . ; 4 NAME THAT HAS BEEN AMONG THE NATIONAL LEAGUE'S LEADERS IN BATTING on the knowledge of the stream, its waler conditions and where fish lie at: dif- ferent water levels. My preference ‘as ani individual is " use either artificial single eggs with a wisp of pink yarn draped over the i a spin-n-gloes or gooy- bobs. When £ fish a run or pool, I will usually use all three if I am not successful with one or the other. And if all else fails, [ often try rae, ‘a spoon Or spinner as a last resorl. When fishing with spin-n-gloes, J vary the size ‘from as large as a number two to as small as a number 14, depending on the height and clarity of the water. Whatever one uses in. trying to catch a steelhead, the experience and con- fidence of the individual angler will, in most in- stances, make the dif- ference between hooking or not hooking a fish. As lime goes on, ] am pradually showing -great distaste for the use of ‘roe, although I personally enjoy using it- while float fishing — and admittedly, there are times when nothing else will catch steelhead. The basic reason I am taking a sition against roe, par- icularly on some rivers, is that it is too efficient, [ do not believe it is necessary or reasonable to ban the use of roe on all rivers throughout the province, Rather I am of the opinion that it should net be used for summer run steelhead in rivers such as the Copper. My experience and others, is that summer fish tend to bite more readily than winter steelhead, this 1 suspect is the result of the warmer water temperalures during the time of their migration. The other. -problem with summer steelhead is that they tend to build up in large riumbers in certain lie holes Or pods over a longer period of time than winter fish. They enter their spawning river during July -and August and don't spawn until as late as the following May. During this period of time they are subject, in many cases, to continuous angling pressure. The result is that it is actually possible to fish out a pool over a given period of time. When a river such as the Copper begins to receive increasing angler pressure ‘to the degree that ‘the steelhead stocks could be in trouble from too many steelhead being killed, then certain sleps have to he taken to reduce the kill and not necessarily in a way THE HERALD, Wednesday, September 22, 1976. Roe in my Opinion, has to be given first consideration inreduycing the kili, Not only - does roe catch more fish, but it encourages anglers to _ kill female ‘sleelhead in preferance to males in order 0 get more roe, As I have stated, 1 don’t believe roe should be restricted in all rivers. During cold water con- ditions, while fishing for b winter steelhead, It is “almost: impossible to catch these fish without using roe. With the slow down in the steelhead’s metabolism and feeding response their in- terest in anything other than natural baits is much in evidence. oo As 1 said, this is a lively subject which will always be a conversation piece among steelhead anglers and ] am sure we will talk about il again in this corner. me Lens) MANAGER, SPARKY ANCERSON THINKS FOSTER (S THE MOST CLEAN-LIVING GUY IN PRO SPORTS BECAUSE HIS LEFT PELBER DOESN'T EVEN DRINK COFFEE!
