Al4 > The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, December 16, 1998 New bench school start could come by next June CONSTRUCTION OF a new elementary school on the bench could begin as early as June of next year. And students could be in its classrooms a year after that, says Terrace trustee Stewart Christensen, That’s as long as the board can decide on one of several standard ~~ building ~ plans issued by the education min: istry when it next meets Jan. 6, 1999, After that, the board has to agree on final cost estimates with the ministry before as-. king for bids on the project. Christensen said the new school], which will be simall- er than Uplands Elementary, is being built to eliminate the portables currently needed al Uplands. By choosing a standard education ministry design — one already used to build an existing school — the board saves $150,000 in planning costs and about a year in planning time. Four ministry plans were on display at the school board office Dec, 11 so the public could pick a favourite design. Of the 20 people who showed up, the majority liked the plans by. the local architectural firm of Royce Condie Associates which designed South Hazelton Elementary. People said they like the mudroom . concept in the South Hazelton plan, “Tt’s a really nice school It's still SPECIFIC DETAILS con-’ ceming the replacement ‘school for Skeena Junior Secondary have yet to be determined, says school dis- | | | trict secretary treasurer Barry Piersdorff. “It’s a. little early,’’ he said last week. “We're looking at meeting early in January to discuss details.” The new school will also , take in Grades 11 and 12 students ‘but trustees have yet to decide how to divide up the student population ' between it and Caledonia Senior Secondary, Terrace trustee Marj Brown said she fears that having two senior schools . and - will create ‘‘have” “have not” schools. She’s worried that only one school will be able to offer shop classes, for ex- ~ ample, because the district % wot be able to afford [, duplicate equipment. And because the schools will divide the student popu- lation between them, there night not be sufficient num- bers at both schools to offer specialty courses, she said. ‘CUPE REPRESENTATIVE Rita Hall looks at one of several standard elementary ‘school building plans under consideration for a new school on the bench. The “plan being examined by Hall was the one used to build the South Hazelton Elementary School. to walk into,’ Christensen said. ‘‘The layout is really nice,”” That’s because the school has a lot of light with the use of diagonal windows to allow more light into class- TOOMS. On ail ihe plans, mullti- * purpose rooms and the gym- nasium were located on one side of the school so they could be more easily used by the public after hours. — The new school will house 200 elementary students and 36 Kindergarten students. It will be located on the south- east corner of Bailey Street and Soucie Avenue on the. bench. Keyless C huck reverse switch. UCF0380420 Heavy Duty 3/8” Drill -- Q-2800 variable speed.
