B4 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, January 29, 1997 Around Town Pulling the plug CASSIE HALL students are saying goodbye to TV again for another week. This is an annual event at the school, and it emphasizes activities families can do together that don’t involve watch- ing TV. Pull the Plug Week runs Jan. 27-31, coinciden- tally just after Superbowl Sunday. This year’s theme at Cassie Hall is winter sports. Students and their families will be playing snow- soccer, floor hockey, and taking part in coopera- tive skiing, treasure hunts, bingo and more, It all wraps up with a dance this Friday, Parents are asked to bring snack and/or finger foods if they can. And if anyone has a Kareoke machine they’re willing to lend, please cali the school. Activities run from 7-8 p.m. at the school, save for family skate at the arena on Thursday night. A plea for help at tax time GOT A HEAD for figures? Then your help is desperately needed this tax season, There are three people who’ve been helping seniors and those with low incomes fill out their income taxes in Terrace. But the service has proved too popular, and they’re swamped, says volunteer Carol Sabo. Last year she and two other volunteers spent every Tuesday morning from the beginning of ” February till the end of April, helping people with income tax. - But unless there’s more volunteers this year, not everyone who needs help will get it, Sabo warns, “We created a good nightmare,”’ she says. The service is only three years old, but there’s a _ huge demand, particularly as people feel the crunch of government cuts to social services. That’s why free help with income tax retums is so urgently needed, Low income earners can’t afford professional help, but they might also miss out on credits to’ which they may be entitled. Revenue Canada is offering a training program for people who want to help. Two, four-hour training sessions are being offered on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Session one goes from noon to 4 p.m. at the college, and session two is from 6-10 p.m. at. the Happy Gang Centre. To register call Brenda McCarron at 635-6511. Or for more info, call Diane or Nicole at 1-800- 463-6737. .3 For healthy hearts NEXT MONTH is Heart Month and canvassers for the Heart and Stroke Foundation will be com- ing door-to-door from Feb. 14-28. There’s a couple other ways you can get in- volved in Heart Month. On Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, wear red to show support for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. ; Also on that day and Feb, 15 you can get you blood pressure tested for free at the Skeena Mall. There will be a table set up from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Feb. 14 and from 10 a.m, to5 .m. on Feb. 15. Getting your blood pressure tested will let you know if you’re at risk for a stroke.
