Gellner’s pottery and Holden’s pencil draw- ings of shell forms com- Holden’s shell forms are reminiscent of the art of Georgia O'Keefe. O’Keefe, who recently died, has become somewhat of a cult figure in the art world, “We have similar in- terests in subject matter. She was always painting shells and skulls. Our use of symmetry and color are also very similar,’’ said Holden, in response to the O’Keefe com- parison. Canadian and American authorities describe our coastal water- courses as 60 percent polluted, In the USSR, 300,000 kilometers of rivers (nearly eight times the cir- cumference of the world) are unusable. The U.S. creates nearly four billion tons of waste each year. It cannot dispose of this waste but it spends as much as all its hospitals and schools together trying to cover it up. The wastes carried into San Franscisco Bay daily include a ton of chrome, copper and other metals, as well as 60 tons of oil. The average modern city (300,000 automobiles) puts 3,000 tons of oil into the sea annually. Day in and day out a million inhabitants produce 2,000 cubic meters of filth that cannot be treated and ends up in the sea. The thousands of tons of detergent that reach all the oceans deprive the water of its oxygen and of its power to clean itself. Laundry products sold with anti-pollution labels are, in fact, even more polluting than the other kind because they break down bacteria. I’ve only just given you the tip of the tip of the iceberg. By 1965, 100,000 tons of radioactive waste were stored at the bottom of the sea, encased in un- safe containers, for example. Just another time bomb waiting to go off, The real problem is that nature has no business sense and vice versa. The solitude and beauty of the lake, Holden finds, is the perfect at- mosphere for work. This is the first show Holden has had in five years. Some of her earlier work from Win- nipeg was in the show. A definite refinement of style is apparent in her recent work. “I’ve ¢col- lected shells all my life, and they are representa- tions of all the shells peo- ple have given to me,’”’ said Holden. Gellner has been pot- ting for 10 years. Though she has sold her work to the local craft shops and the Fireweed gallery in Edmonton, this is her first official art show. Judging by the number of sold stickers on her work, after Fri- day’s opening she is go- ing to be kept very busy. Gellner, who was born. and raised in New York City, now calls Terrace her home. Both artists have samples of their work displayed at the B.C. Festival of the Arts in Prince George. Van- couver art critic Mia Johnson was in Terrace recently to critique and select work for the Festival of the Arts. She has kept in contact with Gellner and Holden. Johnson favored both the artists and they have been discussing the possibility of a Van- couver show in the near future, Warm Water If you have turned down the temperature on your water heater, you may be getting warm water (110 to 120 degrees) when you set your washing machine for a ‘*hot'* wash, — Quick and eaSy..
