VICTORIA - DUNCAN DE-
FENCE DUD: Last week the com-
bined forces of our civil defence

‘held an exercise in the South-

ern part of the Island after a
simulated drop of a megaton
H-bomb, Half of the citizenry
were considered casualties inthe
Victoria area, not so civil de-
fence personnel and government
officials.

They all survived and had a
ball.

Included in the scheme were
fourteen CD aircraft, (whatever
good they were), along withnum-
erous ambulances and other CD
vehicles which may be seen from
time to time cruising about civil-
defencing. During the whole show
no-one mentioned that each per-
son taking would have had to be
in the basement of a stone or
brick building to survive a real
bomb long enough to co-ordinate
rescue and salvage.

A one million ton bomb over
Victoria would reduce every
wooden structure to cinders in
three seconds, That includes
telephone poles as well, but the
phones between Duncan and Vic-
toria buzzed all day of the affair.
Everyone involved considered the
affair a huge success, and the
only sensible conclusion: they
were pleased it wasn’t for real.
None of the civilian population
were disturbed by the big play.

HEARD AND OVERHEARD:
There are fifty-five locked gates

scheme that deserves more
study. It seems for the sum of
four dollars monthly, a family
can get all necessary medical
attention including major surg-
ery. This system was introduced
by the local doctors, Everyone
seems satisfied with the arrange-
ment,

And now they want logging priv-
ileges in some of our parks,
How will they keep locked gates
when ‘‘tourist’’ vandals want to
get through to a good fishing
spot. It should prove interest-
ing.

NDP supporting it because it is
