. VERNON GIVES YOU THE TIME OF DAY — IN FLOWERS - by Ginnie Beardsley The historic institution of the town clock is hardly a necessity in the day of the ubiquitous wristwatch, but a large public clock remains a pleasantly traditional gesture of goodwill. Nowhere Is this gesture more charmingly extended than in the Okanagan city of Vernon — where f! ey say it with flowers when they tell you the time. In the tradition league, the Vernon Floral Clock is a mere youngster, with its official 20th birthday still , two years away, but it has earned a secure place inthe ff hearts of Vernon citizens 5 and is on the “must see” lists of most visitors to the North Okanagan city. Appropriately, the floral ‘ clock is located at the en- trance to the city’s Polson § Park, a place where active f sport and the pleasures of green lawns under great trees live side ff and where § relaxing on by side westerners daily give the lie to Kipling in enjoyment of a Japanese garden Chinese tea house. The floral clock is situated at the junction of the route south to Okanagan Lake and north to Lumby. A flower border divides the park from thestreet and the clock is the focal point of a lawn § area flanked by cedar hedges. Ever since its formal opening in 1958 by Princess” Margaret, the Vernon clock has blossomed out its colorful message of time on the first of June and continued to carry through until September 15. In addition to the perfectly functioning clock designed -by John Clark of Guelph, Ontario, the arden timepiece gives each day’s date no, not automatically.
