TO: Mayor & Aldermen December FROM: Alderman E.W. Mabbett Shortly after our Municipal Elections in 1975, I requested that Council give consideration to a review of our Sign By-law. {f felt that it was too rigid, particularly in the area of politicas signs on Municipal property. However, democracy ruled and Council in their wisdom felt that this By-law was perfectly satisfactory in its present form. I presume you are all aware of some of the incidents that have happened since the Provincial Election Campaign moved into high gear. I think our Administration did the right thing when they had the first lot of signs removed from their illegal locations, and delivered them to the various Campaign Headquarters along with copies of our Sign By-law. The last day or two of. the pre-election campaign saw a great rash of hundreds of signs on many City streets, etc. Along with this some of our civic employees have been harassed by campaigners and also the R.C.M.P. All this at a considerable expense to the - taxpayer. ‘I understand that our By-law Officer was told to leave the signs alone and I would request that someone explain to me why this was allowed to happen when our By-law was apparently quite satisfactory. . This past few weeks has seen two By-laws being allowed to be violated, namely the one concerning burning and now the Sign By~law. When violations are brought to the attention of Council or the Administration they must be allewed to act. It is not fair to the Administration or to the law-abiding citizen to allow this practice to continue. Alderman E.W. Mabbett. 5 ot Hy
