Paye B2 — Terrace Standard, Wednesday, January 17, 1990 First for the I TERRACE — For the first time since its incep: tion 14 years ago, two northwesterners have been selected to take part.in the provincial govern- ment’s Legislative Intern program — and they are both from Terrace, Bruce Hallsor, 22, and Sean Vanderftuit, 22, are among cight individuals who will spend six months:in Victoria learning about the operation of government, completing ministry. work assignments and providing expertise to’caucus’ members of both the Social Credit and ‘New Democrat parties. . Hallsor and Vanderfluit are both graduates of Caledonia Senior Secondary, hold Bachelor .of | Arts degrees (History) from the University of British Columbia and have been members of the B.C. Youth Parliament. Hallsor served as premier of that body in 1987-88 and later held a minister’s post in the Western Canada equivalent. He was also chair- man of the Commonwealth Club during his time at UBC. A member of the BC Youth Parliament since 1984, Vanderfluit is the current premier and, in 1987, participated { in the preparation its ‘archival ~ collection. He is also a member. of the Royal Commionwealth Society.: ~~ The Intern progress is intended to give recent University graduates with an interest in public af- ‘fairs an opportunity to see at first hand how the legislature works while providing MLAs with _ some additional assistance during the session. Hallsor and Vanderfluit will begin with a two week ‘orientation period during which they will meet elected and appointed offi cials and then move on to work for a specifi ic ministry for the following six weeks, The remaining four. months will be spent with an individual MLA. The party they work for will be decided by random selection with its caucus determining which of its members the intern assists, During the course of the program, Hallsor and 'Vanderfluit will also have an opportunity to take part in an exchange visit to at least one other legislature.
