Poison control programs have been under a moratorium since last December, which leaves the growing wolf population free to prey on both herds and big game. Crack, who is responsible for the area encompassing Terrace, Kitimat, and ‘the Nass Valley, says there is a plentiful supply of game available here. But it is a misconception he explains, to hetieve wolves will set their sights just on moose and other big game. “Wolves will feed on any meat they can get, especially beaver,”’ he noted. “The only easily and get exhausted.” Another source of food is fish, Crack sald wolves will often feed on spawning fish, especially cohe since they are easy to get at. But when the winter frost arrives, the and other smaller animals go into hibernation. “Therefore they are aimost forced to pack up and go after bigger game," the wildlife officer explained. “The greater number of better their chances of - getting the prey.” “In the spring and sum- mer the wolf packs break up into family groups because they have pups to rear,” Crack said wolves don't intentionally go afler ran- chers’ herds. It simply a matter of them being “unable to tell the difference between a cow or moose.” What makes a cow more attractive game, is the fact that it is slower and thus easier to catch. A wolf has no qualms about going after a ranging cow. “The cow is now on the range formerly inhabited by moose and other wild animals,’ Crack explained. While acknowledging that Kispiox ranchers have a wolves joining together, the legitimate gripe, he wants to see a limiled poison control program reinstituted, not comprehensive poisoning that bas in the past, claimed the lives of both the predator and the prey.
