Highway 16 West ; Of Skeena Forest Products PHONE 435-4564 — _ 635-6357 15 CENTS “Failure” AN OPEN LETTER TO. THE YOUTH OF TERRACE, THE FAMILIES OF THE YOUTH 0 TERRACE, AND TO MR. FREDERICK LOCKE i ASSISTANT SECRETARY-TREASURER OF THE SCHOOL BOARD A musical concert was ATTEMPTED to be held in the Skeena School Auditorium for last Sunday. It was forced to be cancelled due to Mr. Locke’s refusal to let the young people of Terrace use school facilities, — With the Civic Center gone, the schools which are the youth centers of education, may NOT be used for the recreation of the young. In all fairness to Mr. Locke, the use of the schools must be.made through the School Board. I believe this means Mr. Locke is acting as a “‘glorified’’ secretary. It also i" means that although it is permissable for local adult organizations to come in and use the school for adult programs, it is not permissable for young, to quote Mr: Locke ‘Outsiders and punks like yourself”’ to come in - The School. Board meets this Wednesday to decide whether or not to allow the schools to fill the gap left by the Civic Center burning. When I asked Mr. Locke why it took a month for a meeting to be held on such an important and necessary issue as this, and before he hung up on me he said that “This town (Meaning Terrace) doesn’t need out- side agitators (meaning myself ) to come here and - try to turn the town tipsy-turvy .(meaning the . provide musical entertainment for the young) and majority and let the minority rule as it sees fit.” power to give 'the young people of Terrace the musical entertainment they desire and if you, or the School Board, or other power that. be feel that ' while it is alright for adults to use the school facilities, it is not permissable for the young (nuts, slobs, young punks, etc.) to-use school facilities then it is time for-a change somewhere. 1 am sure that the parents of these young (nuts, punks, slobs, etc.) people who pay the taxes ‘that pay your wages would trust their children to attend a concert or dance in their school just as they would trust them at any other reputable establishment. Mr. Locke stated that any future dealing with him had to be done by letter. Please accept this letter as a request by me, as a representative of the young people of Terrace (this is my home now) to use the school facilities for dances and or concerts" -would also like to state here, my request for a - public apology by you Mr. Locke for calling me a “public agitator, punk, out-sider, ete. Ciara street areas of Terrace -are concerned about a piece of road which they say has allowed too many accidents in the past. The road in concern is the section of Munthe between North Sparks and Anderson. The signatures petition that the section of road be changed to a one-way throughfare, thus culling down the number af accidents. vs both directions on ail thi: dbove streets, with the only traffic control being a stop sign for ‘motorists intending to turn onto North Sparks fron: Munthe," the petition stated. Munthe as it approaches North Sparks (easily in excess of a 5 percent slope) coupled with extremely lizated vision of oncoming uphill traffic, makes turns, especially left turns, very hazardous’ even under good, road and weather conditions. The majority of protestors agreed that a one-way through- fare would be theanswer. Some disagreed ‘however. One complaintant said that traffic would still be hazardous in the pedestrian’s point of view if such a plan was adopted. Council later agreed the solution is difficult to reach and. possibly far away. A study committee was formed to look into the matter.
