INGRAM Business Agent, Local 1-85, IWA There has been much discussion and criticism by our members working in isolated camps on the West Coast of Vancouver Island in regard to the high cost of transportation. Many of these members are hired and sent out by the hiring agencies in Vancouver by plane. They are not told that in most instances there is a cheaper way to travel to almost 75% of our operations. It would take a little longer to get there. But in most cases a man hiring out has nothing but time. The only thing he is short of is money and to waste that on fares hurts. B.C. Air Lines officials claim that although wages to their employees have increased over the years, fares on the West Coast have remained fairly stable. Many of our members truthfully claim they can fly to points back east and return cheaper than they can fly to the West Coast. The B.C. Air Lines officials don’t deny this. Their argument is that there are no airfields or roads to these isolated camps and they are required to use smaller float planes to service this area plus the fact that there is not the same volume of travel as there is to the east. For the information of all those contemplating going to work in the West Coast Camps or Tahsis Mill, Tahsis, I hope the following information and fare cost will be of some benefit: Ways to get to Union Camps on the West Coast of Van- couver Island: Schedule 1.—Direct flight from Vancouver to Tahsis Mill, Tahsis, B.C. by the Mallard. Then you are put on a smaller plane and transported to your destination. Schedule 2.—Ferry to Nanaimo, bus to Campbell River, then direct flight by plane to your destination. Schedule 3.—Ferry to Nanaimo, bus to Gold River via Camp- bell River—then by the vessel Uchuck to most camps as far as Zeballos. WHAT ARE THE FARES?
